I just want to get a little nutty for a moment and suggest that if M$ can force down 'secret' updates - could they be breaking XP to make Vista look better??

When are they forcing down secret updates?

Microsoft will also have end of shelf life meaning a date when they a) stop selling XP and b) stop supporting it. Those dates are already known for OEM sales. Microsoft has no reason to "kill" the os secretly when they are planning to kill it quite publicly:

This was the second round I believe. Never did figure out what happened or why they did it. I'm not paranoid enough to think they had were doing evil, more like they had their pants down and were trying to pull them up.

I wonder if XP will available for those computers newly assembled out of older parts? This doesn't seem well thought out long term.

Phasing out one O.S., and phasing in another isn't exactly a new thing. Yes, eventually XP will go the way of Win '98 and '95 did before them, and will continue to be usable, but not supported. Has to happen sooner or later. I don't know how many millions of people used to (and in some cases still do) use Win '98, but the line had to be drawn some time. ~ No conspiracy involved, just changing times.

Snap out of the nutty moment Foogoo ;)

Some would argue that they did a great job of breaking Vista already!

One big diff with XP, they have to clear the OS for it to be usable, unlike 98 or 95. This means they strictly control it. If M/S shuts XP down without allowing people to get copies, people will either have to crack it or go 98, neither being the best or most honest solution.

Vista is not compatible with a huge amount of hardware out there, some of it isn't that old. Buying it for older hardware is simply not an option, whereas XP worked with older stuff from day one. I have built a lot of old hardware that XP would work on just fine (although 98 was/is my OS of choice).

The only time that would be an issue is if someone lost their OEM software, or just grabbed spare parts and started building.

Believe it or not, all of those used copies of 9x out there...many are in violation of EULA.

MS already stated it will kill off XP activation so folks can still use it on some unspecified future date.

    O Rly? :D

JMO, but M/S would still be smart to sell XP, without the activation requirements. Fat chance though. BTW, I have a HUGE stock of spare parts. The packrat gene runs strong in my family.

Are we awake yet? :D Now its my turn. Can't sleep.

Yes, yes I know about life cycles, but it is scary to think that they can 'control' your PC. I never read the EULA, is there an expiration date?
Today they announced that Vista is out selling its expectation? Thats because where my gf bought her laptop they told her that Vista is embedded in the BIOS and the system will only boot to Vista..nice story.
More to the truth is you just can't find drivers for XP on *most* built for Vista units, I hear.. my gf won't let me reload it & find out. :(

    The past is the past....

Microsoft isn't the one not making XP drivers available.

Nice salesman bullcrap, by the way. I wonder where they come up with this stuff?

MA's link is slightly out of date, see this link: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7017624.stm

However, despite MS extending the deadline for the demise of Win XP it is expected to go at some point. It should be noted that you only license the software from MS you don't actually own it. Hence MS as a "landlord" can choose what it likes to do with the "tenant" or "licensee" within the scope of the law.

So how about that new Apple OS, Panther? :D

It would be funny on one level to see some serious competition with M/S. Sometimes I feel very ignored by those folks.

Just got the iPhone and see why people consider switching to Apple afterwards, the sale was easy and pleasant, not pushy. Activation took minutes and it is so easy to use and such a intuitive interface.

Apple is at 10% market share and coming hard. MS better wake up with their inferior, bloated operating systems or Apple will sneak up and have 30% market share like Firefox did to IE

And may they rest in peace! So glad to be rid of them! :D

Only thing I request is that they let the OS overlap so long that I can skip one step all the time, and only have to buy every other OS! Hoping I can skip Vista and go straight for Vienna! At least that is my reply when someone asks when I'll install Vista! roflmao

Wohoo, maybe I can go back to being one of those crazy mac people again! :)

Had to ditch my old performa about 10 years ago, couldn't afford to upgrade it or get a new one, PC was just so much cheaper...

I truly believe that if Apple released OS X to the masses, Microsoft would suffer tremendous losses. The problem is, it would require a pretty hefty restructuring of the company.

How about just an "opps, look! It'll run on PC's" approach.

Wait, it will run on PC's.

But if they price it like Mac's, M/S is safe.
