Nv4_disp.dll?

Game crashed when I was running a benchmark test on World In Conflict. The very long error message contained Nv4_disp.dll so I googled it and found an enormous amount of references to missing dlls with suggestions to download "a free" repair program. It turned out many are just scans that alarm you with the hundreds of errors that can only be fixed by buying the program.

I have no problem buying tools to fix my computer but further inquiry revealed that a simple fix may not resolve the issue and that depending on the specific problem there may be hundreds of registry errors tied to that one message.

I need help/guidance as to what I need to do. I tried replicating the crash in order to carefully copy the exact message but of course it hasn't happened again, yet.

My GTX280 is factory OC'd and my cpu OC'd to 3.6 ghz (E8400) all was working well with a 4870 OC'd but with the Nvidia the problems began.

In Assassins Creed the EVGA tool (which works fine with other games) recorded my gpu temps going from 45c to 90c in less than a second whereas with my other games [Crysis] with the same fan speed (65%) I never exceed 68c under load.

    Hi

I wouldnt buy any of those alledged fix it apps as hundreds of DLLs errors seems excessive.

Likely you just need to reduce your OC a tad as too high could cause the GFX card drivers to error with random errors, or even the OS to start with strange errors and BSODs.

Do give us the full message if it happens again.

    Hello Halo,
I followed your suggestion and turned down the OC and so far all games seem to run OK except Assassins Creed. I mention that one app with the hope that you might have had the occasion to help someone with same or similar problems. It's the only one that shows outrageously high temps 80-98c and odd fps readings. I would address this concern to Ubisoft but they like all absentee "landlords" take your money and refuse to return your calls. Any way, thanks for the vigilance.

    Okay,
I lowered the OC on my gpu and then installed 181.20 drivers, after which the BSOD returned.

"Device driver got stuck in an infinite loop this usually indicates problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.

    Technical information:
    ***STOP: 0x000000EA (0x8A10CDA8,0x8A24D2B8,0xF78D6CBC,0x00000001)

    Nv4_disp
    Beginning dump of physical memory
    Physical memory dump complete."

I'll try another possible solution before yanking the Nvidia card and putting back my 4870:(
