Apologies in advance for the long-winded post!

I had this problem at the beginning of the month, and then it seemed to right itself for a couple of weeks. Now the damn thing is back!

Firstly, these are the specs of my laptop (according to Everest):

    HP Pavillion notebook, DV9702ea
    Computer:
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Edition
OS Service Pack: Service Pack 2
    DirectX: 4.09.00.0904 (DirectX 9.0c)
    Motherboard:
CPU Type: Mobile , 1983 MHz
Motherboard Name: Hewlett-Packard HP Paviliondv9700 Notebook PC
    Motherboard Chipset: Unknown
    System Memory: 2048 MB
    BIOS Type: Phoenix (02/22/08)

    Multimedia:
Audio Adapter: High Definition Audio Controller [NoDB]

I was using my laptop as normal (), when the screen went black then flickered a bit, then went back onto desktop and completely locked up. Couldn't even get to task manager. The error that came up was the dreaded nvlddmkm and said that it had recovered, but obviously it couldn't have recovered too well with my whole system locking up!?

Tried rebooting, the welcome screen kept hanging. Finally got to desktop and then as things were starting to load on the desktop, completely locked up again but no black screen this time. Just totally frozen. Again could not get to task manager or anything.

Found that I could get everything loaded up fine in safe mode. No little dots all on the screen or anything. No hang-ups or freezing.

Tried updating the drivers, and restarting. Got a blue screen with a ton of text, it rebooted itself so fast I couldn't even get a chance to read what was on the screen.

It went through the whole blue screen and restarting itself a couple of times and then finally I could do a repair. So I did this.

Problem still occured. Went back in through safe mode, uninstalled nvidia drivers and restarted. Windows starts up fine, loads fine, no hang-ups or freezes. Downloaded drivers again and installed them, restart system again, same problem occuring AGAIN.
So I uninstall them again....and this time through device manager, I search for the driver update through microsoft and it installs everything needed fine except for the display drivers. It keeps saying it cannot install them as the syntax of the INF is invalid.

How can I fix this? I'm getting very annoyed with it all now!
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi

Windows update is not always the best place to get drivers from at times, the original manufacturer is the best place as in yours being HP

and I would install the Chipset driver HERE first and reboot (do reboot as its crucial to the driver installing correctly) then install the graphics driver from HERE

Then check Device Manager for any yellow ! marks.

    Greetings, kittieme0w.

If after reinstalling the drivers you still experience problems, you might click Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced System Settings > Startup and Recovery > Settings, uncheck 'Automatically restart', and make sure 'Write an event to the system log' is checked.

That way, if you experience the blue screens again, we may be able to ascertain the particular driver that's causing the crash.
