    Hello!
I have a Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 graphics card. I downloaded a new driver for it and the installation went well. But after I restarted my computer my color-quality couldn't go above 4-bits.
I got the following message: "Do you want Windows to automatically correct your screen and color depth settings?" I clicked on yes, but nothing happened. I restarted my computer again and my color-quality remained 4-bits and the message popped up again. No matter how many times I restarted nothing changed.
I tried both re-downloading the driver and re-installing it on my computer. Nothing changed.

A few hours after I installed the driver, my computer screen became B&W with horizontal stripes all over. Each time I moved my cursor the screen would blacken for a moment and then return. I removed my NVIDIA drivers and after a restart my computer went back to normal.

My operating system Windows XP Pro and my motherboard make and model is MSI PT880 Neo-SR (MS-7008).

What's the problem with the driver? And how can I fix it?

Does you motherboard have its own on board video? If so, unplug the power cord from the PC, open the case, and remove the FX5200. Then locate the CMOS jumper and use it to clear the BIOS settings to defaults. Then plug the monitor into the on board video, plug the power cord in, power up, and go into the BIOS (press F1 or F2 or Del) and set the date and time, save your settings, and boot into Windows. Go into Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the NVidia drivers. Then download and run CCleaner using the defaults; run it on the hard drive and the registry. Now, go into the Device Manager and look under Display Adapters. Your on-board adapter should be listed or there will be a question mark or exclamation point 'cuz thedriver isn't loaded, no big deal; right click on it and select Disable. You may get a message about requiring a restart; even if you don't restart the PC and go straight into the BIOS. Locate the setting for "Initialize display device" (it may be worded differently) and set it for AGP or PCI depending on what type of video card you have. Some BIOSes also have a setting somewhere to disable the on board video. If you have this, disable the on board video. Save the changes, exit the BIOS, right when the first logo screen comes up, hold in the power button to shut down the PC. Unplug the power cord and install the FX5200 and plug the monitor into it and power up. If Windows starts the hardware wizard, cancel it. Now, using this link download and install those drivers. Be sure to restart when finished.

    Phew.... what a workout ;)

That should do it... let us know how it goes, and welcome to Major Geeks! :wave :major

If you don't have on board video, you can basically follow the same steps as much as possible. Of course, you won't need to disable anything in the device manager, but be sure to set the correct display device in the BIOS.

honestly it doesnt sound so complicated as he is getting video feed from his 5200 and as soon as he removes the drivers his screen is somewhat normal, besides the lack of drivers. try downloading forceware 77.77 readily available from senor google

most likely the latest drivers have left your 5200 in the dust and an older series of drivers will better suit it. im currently having the same issue with a 7900gs agp, which i am about to post about...
