have downloaded the nvidia driver, extracted the files, but when I run setup, an error message pops up saying the driver is not compatible with any of my hardware.

I'm pretty sure I have a nvidia video card on may com. Why is it coming up with this message?? Any help would be great.

First make sure you have a Nvidia card.
Second when you go through to pick the correct driver make sure that you picked the right options( OS, Card type ...)
My 3rd suggestion is to try to run it in safe mode( I had similar problem and that did the trick)
Thats all i can think of

Thank you for your reply Tourangh,

    1) Just to confirm since I'm not too familiar with coms, when I go start/controlpanel/system/hardware/display manager/display adaptor: it shows - nvidia geforce fx go5200 32/64m. That would be the hardware?

    2) When I right click on above, and select drivers, I can clearly see the old driver (since it is from 2004 year). I then click update drivers and select (advanced option) the folder that the new drivers have been extracted.

However, if all things went according to plan, is the above the same as if I went directly into the folder which has the extracted files and clicked on setup.exe? So there is two ways of doing this, or am I missing something?

    3) I have just tried the above on safe mode, and it didn't work. However, I remember having read somewhere that I should uninstall my current driver first. Would this be a safe option?

Thanks again for your reply and any further help would be great!

I have two 5200's in this house and have always updated by simply downloading the new driver and clicking on the .exe file, I've never done it any other way.

If your running XP this should be your driver... http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_2k_77.77.html

    Good luck

Hardware in question is a laptop?

The Geforce FX Go series are not for some unknown reason supplies in the general Forceware driver updates, you generally have to goto your laptop makers site and get the latest drivers ( I know the forceware drivers can be hacked to add compatability for the Go series but its not worth any stability issues )

Ah, good catch, though, I never ran into this, it is still good to know!

Ditto. They should have that listed or noted on their Driver Page.

Thanks for the info. Yes, mine is a laptop. I've searched the toshiba www but the drivers listed there are so outdated. I've written to toshiba techsupport in the hope that they can help and am awaiting their reply.

Geez this could potentially mean I won't be able to play the latest online games.

    Thanks Halo,

    Very grateful for your time.

However, I'm still getting the same message of incompatibility with my nvidia card. I just don't understand.
