    Hello,
I am having trouble getting the drivers installed for my video card. If I reboot I always get the new hardware wizard. I go through the process and always end up with an error "The parameter is incorrect."

I turned off zone alarm and AVG but it made no difference and I have downloaded the new drivers from the nvidia site. The device manager shows an exclamation mark on the Display adapter > video controller(VGA compatable) and the run > dxdiag shows I am running generic drivers. I have even updated the directX.

I am not sure what more info is needed. Any suggestions on a next step?

    1. NVIDIA GeForce4 MX440 video card.
    2. WindowsXP

    Thanks,
    Scott

I forgot to mention that I do go to Add/Remove programs and remove all nvidia programs before I attempt a new install and that I have downloaded the new drivers from several different locations.

I know when I installed my Nvidia card the original install had to be done from the disc

Thanks for the response. I have tried both suggestions. The original CD acts the same as the download. And I have downloaded and installed the VIA 4in1 for VIA chipsets. The same problem as before. I had the drivers installed at one time for online gaming and worked without any problems. I haven't gamed for about 9 months and have no idea when the drivers switched to generic drivers. Maybe some of my poker site installs? I will work more on it tomorrow. It's always something.

    Thanks,
    Scott S.

Okay, after you uninstalled your previous drivers, make sure you restart your computer. It should go back to onboard video, and the resolution should drop a bit. Head over to Nvidias website and download their latest drivers, they're more up to date then the ones on your cd. Install those, then restart, and see if it works then.

Latest drivers are 81.98, I got mine from the nvidia site. You should not have to disable your AV or Firewall, nor uninstall the old ones, or even use the CD that came with the card. Nvidia drivers are self installing just like a game program, simply accept the License Agreement and it goes.

I had a similar problem way back which lead me to this great site and fixed it via Driver Cleaner Pro, http://majorgeeks.com/Driver_Cleaner_Professional_d3214.html

It will completely clean out anything left from your old drivers and should allow you to install the new ones. Follow the directions provided.

    Good Luck.

Thanks for all the advice. But it is still not installing the nvidia drivers. The newest drivers, 81.98, won't even allow me to boot up all the way. I will keep working at it. Thanks again.

If they still will not install, try an older version of the driver, like maybe back to the 7XXX series. If you have tried all the options, this may the only one left. It sure couldn't hurt!

I tried that. It won't take any nvidia drivers at all. I did find an entry in the registry that refuses to delete. Even with Driver Cleaner Pro.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/NvidiaCorporation

I ran into driver problems with the latest one from Dec 21. For some odd reason it just wasn't working good with my PC. So I had to uninstall and than install the driver update prior to 21 Dec. I don't know if this will help you any, maybe try installing a previous driver

opps sorry, I didn't read the above posts.

Thanks for all the feedback. I finally figured it out this morning. It was that registry setting. I got it to delete by doing a right click and changed the permission setting. Then I was able to delete the setting and then load the old drivers off the CD. I will have to think about loading some of the new drivers, lol.I guess as long as I now how to fix it it should be easy next time.
