The release of the latest GPUs from Nvidia is now marked for 26 March and the suspected price is between $600 and $700 so they are not for the faint of heart.

If the rumors are to be believed this will be the fastest card on the market.

Looks impressive, likely to be more stories and maybe some tests around next week at CeBIT tradeshow in Hannover.

Steep price, but give it 6mths past release date and "should" be more affordable.

Hooooooooooooooooo Doggie! That looks interesting to say the least!

I wonder what ATI are doing to rival this?

I burnt out my GTX295 a couple of weeks ago so maybe i will see what price my retailer can get one for?

    They don't need to!

They've already got the 5970 and even the 5870 can beat this overpriced tech from NV.

    Release day has come! :-D:-D:-D

And well, and to be honest, i'm dissapointed! :(:(:(

    Review of the GTX 480.

There is a small supply of the new cards, so if prices do ever come down, i suspect they will take their time!

seems that it's better than ati?

It's better than a card that costs £100/$140 less than it! (the 5870)

The GTX 480 is supposed to be nvidia's top card, but the 5970 (ATI's top card, yes OK costs more but it beats it in nearly every benchmark.

I think Nvidia have really let themselves down here.

They are running close but in a number of the tests the ATI card was overclocked to achieve the performance.

I am a staunch Nvidia supporter, i just wish they would get the prices down.

Oh yeh same, but even so.

And have you seen how hot the Fermi's run!!!!

    OUCH!!! :eek

    Yep they are certainly hot.

I had intended to buy one but after reading the reports on it i may decide to get another GTX295 or get another GTX260 (i am running one now) and sli them.

Keep in mind that the ATI HD5970 is a dual-GPU card, and the GTX480 is a single GPU card, so the HD5970 will naturally beat it. The HD5870 is really close in performance to the GTX480, and actually beats the GTX480 in some tests, but all these tests must be looked at objectively. Many other things come in to play, like the CPU speed, RAM speed, temperatures (and the GTX480 is supposed to be 'safe' up to at least 105c!), etc..... and even with all things being identical, all things aren't truly identical. For example: I can run 3dMark '06 on my PC 5 times in a row, and get five different scores. The scores will be pretty close, but they are still different which illustrates what I'm talking about here (I think?).

Some info for folders from FAH-Addict:

Some folders are not liking the increase in power use as fossil electricity is only going to rise, lots of them are getting out of the game totally because of this. Others are thinking to just go i7 and OC the heck out of them instead of GPU folding as it's cheaper per points. Depends on how long the -bigadv WUs are going to last.

Just an update if anyone cares, Newegg has them @ $500US for a pre-order and what surprised me more was that ncix Canada is asking for only $540 CDN for the same thing. I better re-price my wanted i7 machine as I just saw the i7 920 D0 priced at $280USD and $290 CDN. I guess the US buck tanking has finally caught up as the i7 920 D0 was $350 CDN just last week!:eek

I don't think I'll get a Fermi as it's just too new but a second GTX 260 sure wouldn't hurt.;) Off to populating my wish lists again.-D
