I have the money to buy a new card and have my eyes on a high-end card I'm wondering will a nVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT card run on a 1.4ghz with 768ram system without causing harm to the PC?

not sure what your thinking when you say "causing harm to the pc"
the card will work, but with only a 1.4ghz processor your cpu will be the bottle neck.

as Mellowman said, the card will run without harming the computer, but you wont get the cards full potential as the CPU will bottleneck the bandwidth.

you might want to look into upgrading your processor to the highest that your motherboard will support, as a possible alternative to a motherboard/RAM/CPU upgrade.

That card needs a 3ghz proccessor to max it out,so you only get 50% of its potential performance wasting half you money, even more if you only have an agp x4 motherboard,In years to come is right time for a new system. :( :( :(

You know some guys spend $500 on one golf club, then there's course fees travel costs, there are much more expensive hobbies around I like messin with comps compare it to any other hobby and it aint that expensive.

Infamous is prepared to spend between $200-$300 on a graphics card,so he must be fairly interested in computers and gaming and he has joined a geek site.

If you tell any normal person to spend that much on a circuit board they'll cough thier food up! :D

we are assuming that Infamous was running an Intel 1.4ghz processor, any by comparison, your 2600+ is 2.5~2.6ghz intel. thats why you see nice performance.

To Infamous, what kind of computer do you have? if it is a brand name, what is the model number? if not, what kind of motherboard do you have? we can get a better idea of what would be best for you from this information.

ok, from what I've gathered, there is a BIOS update for you that fixes some fan control problems with higher model Athlon XP's. current version is 3.06, and you said you have 2.0

you are for sure able to upgrade to a 2100+, though some places claim the BIOS will recognize a 2400+. The problem is, a 2400+ is about the same price as a 2800+, so it doesnt make much sense to go for the 2400.

also something we've all overlooked is that the GeForce 6 series are power hungry. the default compaq power supply (235w i believe) will likely not even give enough power to the card anyway.

sorry to say again, but it looks like you have 2 choices... upgrade to a GeForce4 or FX series card for decent improvement (or a Radeon 9600 series), or get a new computer (motherboard, power supply, CPU, Case, possibly RAM depending on the CPU) in order to see much performance from a nicer video card.

Thanks for the rundown. I don't completly know how to build a computer from scratch just know how to most hardware so, any suggestions on a new brand name PC specifically for gaming?

Only joking dude,Your best bet is to ask around friends family see where they got there's,somewhere close to home is always best so you dont have to travel when it doesnt work,if you buy your parts from a shop sometimes they will put them all together for free,or a small charge.

I'v found it best to buy my parts from a good cheap large company, who refund for none satisfaction even if its working, this is best also because if it brakes, its none personal and you dont feel bad about taking it back.

Its hard to recommend a complete system because they all put cheap parts in people only seem to realize when they try to upgrade something how crap thier computer is,if you post exactly how much you can spend, roughly where you live,im sure someone on here will find you a good system and at the same time any you have seen on the internet,in shops describe them on here or post a link and they will tell if its worth it

price range? that really determines who makes what you want. Also, building a PC really isnt as difficult as you'd imagine.

    Nothing higher than $1500

Jesus man,you came here looking for graphics card and now you want a new $1500 rig?Its a bitter pill!

building PC's is easy but there are always mistake's made on the first attempts and if your me second and third,if your prepared and willing to work through these and any potential non working parts youll save alot of money but it can be stressfull.

cant really recommend any full systems, not had any experience with them especially u.s ones being from the uk but I'd stick with one that builds them to order and stay away from mass marketed computers. :D

MajorAttitude, Jim, one of the owners of this site, highly recommends http://www.abspc.com/ (as seen in THIS thread)

according to him, hes bought a few PCs and referred a few people to them and never had a single complaint.

their base desktop (athlon 64 3000+ socket 939 and 6600GT) starts at $1249. it may be worth looking into.
