Nvidia GF 5500 driver problem

I have a geforce 5500 and when I tried to start half life2 i got an error that said could not int shading. I went to the HL2 forum and it said my video driver was out of date. That was corect. the problem I have now is when I download the new version of the driver (from the nvidia web sight) and try to install it it tells me it can not locate that device on my machine. I then installed the driver that came with the card (off the disk) when I purchased it and then tried to update the driver again. It still says the same thing. The version im trying to update to is 71.89. Is this the corect driver and if it is, what the heck am I doing wrong?

 

Yes it is the correct driver and no you aren't really doing anything wrong.

If your card has an nVidia chip, regardless of the manufacturer then you should just be able to use the nVidia reference drivers.

Only thing I can think of is that the card has been designed to only use the manufacturer's driver, although I have never heard of that.

What brand is it, and have you looked on their website for any known issues or restrictions?

Have you tried an earlier driver revision?

 

the box says nvidia right on it. Its from BFG tech. When I go to there web sight and try to dowload a driver for it, it sends me to the nvidia sight.

 

BFG make great cards and have a life time warranty as far as I know.

If that is the case I suggest you email them.
