Oblivion and other games not running as should...

I am sure I don't have any malware or anything like that, the game is patched and I have all of the windows updates and drivers before anyone thinks thats the problem ;)

    Now, my rig is..
    1 GB of DDR2 800 RAM
    Nvidia 8600 GT
    amd 2.1 dual core (4000+)
100+ GB of free HDD space
    420 wat PSU

I cannot even run oblivion on medium settings without getting 30 fps for some reason. I know everything is up to date yet I'm still suffering from performance problems. (I think I am having the same problem with other games but I am unsure)

I have no clue whats causing this, but its bugging the crap out of me.

    Thanks,
    Axis304

thats about all the performance ur gonna get on oblivion with that setup, it's a killer game when it comes to hardware requirements. Adding another gig of RAM would be very beneficial to your system. You may want to experiment with overclocking as well if you want a free performance boost

If you want to run Oblivion without hardware upgrades, scale the graphics down to the absolute minimum settings, and then take them up one by one, until you find the balance where you can run it at a decent frame rate, but still with more than minimum graphics. Some settings take more out of a system than others, for example moving shadows and anti-aliasing should be completely disabled in any game you try to run on that computer.

Something to note? FPS is not that terribly important past 30. Standard television refreshes at 25fps, because that's as fast as the eye can follow. More isn't really helpful.

You'd probably be best off just rebuilding that computer from the ground up. Don't save anything, except maybe the drive.

But another 1GB of RAM would help a lot.

The reason I am concerned is because other people on the oblivion forums are recording playing this game on the highest specs with a system just a tad weaker than mine. I have nearly double (if not more) than all of the games requirements to play the game.

    They are lying.

Run the Game-O-Meter here and see how well you system measures up. Once you know what you have to work with, you'll know what you need to do to get a decent frame rate.

And Adrynalyne is right. Those people are lying.

According to that website. This game should be no problem for me (Just as canyourunit.com said), yet I'm still having problems.

    Reccomended etc. results

Why do they think I should change my CPU to one rated at 3500+ when mine is rated at 4000+?

    My Desktop specs:

    AMD X2 4400+
    Nvidia 7800GTX factory overclocked
    Asus A8NSLI-32 Deluxe
    2gb Corsair TWINX2048-3500LLPRO DDR @ 2-3-2-6 T1
    200gb Sata 3.0 gb/s drive
    300 gb Sata 150 drive w/ 16mb cache

My system is superior to yours in every way, but not in a massive way, so I think I have a valid point here.

I cannot run at highest specs without considerable frame rate issues. I've had the game since it released, and even with the latest patches, it still suffers from performance issues. No game runs at full speed w/ full quality at reccomended manufacturer specs, by the way.

I fully understand that, but mine (as well as yours) are far above the suggested manufacturers specs.

So what would you suggest I run the game at? I cannot even seem to get it above medium.

I wasn't aware that the 7800GTX was better than the 8600 GT. Mine is also factory overclocked....weird
(I'm not being sarcastic so please don't think I am)

I do appreciate all the help you are giving me.

Until you get more ram, dont expect much more than medium. As for the 8600gt, a 7800gt can keep up with it, and a GTX does better than that...

Nvidia has been backpedaling on some their chipsets, imo. Of course, the 8600gt is a budget card. 8600gts would be more on par with my card.

I know I said this before, but it bears repeating:

A machine at reccomended machine specs cannot run games at full quality, most of the time.

Thanks a lot for all of your help.

I do plan on getting another stick of ram soon, how much overall do you think that would improve my performance?

I would think you could easily see a 20% improvement if not more; Oblivion can use over 1gb of ram itself just running. Thats a guesstimate though.

Don't forget that the other big memory hog that is windows is required to run Oblivion. XP seems to use more than it's fair share, so that's a contribution that your second stick'll solve.

As others have said, just because you meet the Requirements posted on the box doesn't neccesarily mean your gonna get the best performance. WinXp (and especially Vista) takes up a decent amount of your RAM. When I had just 1Gb of RAM and played TES:Oblivion, I noticed I only had about 7oomB free for game usage. So your not getting your full RAM allotment. Also what your seeing or hearing from other ppl with weaker systems than yours can be easily answered, either they are lying or they have their systems overclocked to extreme speeds.

I recently upgraded, my pc and I can get only 40-60 FPS when all Ultra High settings @ 1280x960. TES: Oblivion is a very demanding game even now.

    mobo: Asus P5N32 E-Sli
    cpu: q6600 @2.5gHz
    RAM: 2GB Mushkin Extreme
    VCard: 8800GTS 640MB (stock speeds)
    HDD: 400GB 3.0secSATA+160GB 3.0secSATA
    Sound Card: X-FI XtremeGamer

Also, to the other ppl that believe you can't really tell the difference between 25FPS and 60+FPS, I don't think that is entirely correct. I notice the ever so slightly stutter when my FPS drop to 25-35, and when I hit 120+FPS in games the game really does look alot more silky. Almost like melted milk chocolate in a way.
