Windows 10 1903 One Note and OCR.

I have watched tutorials and used Google as much as I can.

Perhaps I have missed a setting that prevents me from using OneNote.

I cannot turn scanned documents in .PDF, JPG or any format to utilize the OCR engine. I cannot do this with any document.

I have MS Office Home and Student 2019 which is a download and includes Word.

I have used Windows OCR but do not think it works well. Free an Simple OCR are tedious b/ one must edit a lot after the OCR process.

When I watch a tutorial I do as they do but none seem to look like my OneNote

Can anyone think of a reason I am unable to use OCR as I should be able to do. It is part of Windows 1903 as far as I know. I have clicked repair to no avail.

I really need to edit some documents in order to save a lot of typing but Abby Fine reader is so expensive as is Nuance.

    Thank you

Do you mean that when you right click a picture file you have pasted into OneNote that you are not getting the option to extract text? If not that please explain exactly what your issue is.

I will go into detail but first are you sure that Windows 1903 supports OCR with OneNote. I have read it was removed.

I have little use for it myself so have had to test it today to see if it works as it should in my 1903. It does.

Thank you. I will try to give you more information about my right click option which seems lacking.

@peterr I suspect you are starting OneNote from the Start menu, that's the desktop version. Try starting OneNote from Office instead. If it works you may find the desktop version also works correctly afterwards.

This is what I see when I right click to paste to Word.

My sequence is to scan a document to desk to open. Open OneNote + import it to that page. Right click for the option to create OCR but see none.
Please correct my procedure if you detect errors.

I have MS Office Home and Student 2019. It only gives me Word. I did reach 365 by typing office in search and it allowed me to get OneNote. I did not know what right click option to use.

This is what you should see, but if your version of Office does not have OneNote then you can't use my suggestion and atm I don't have another.

I made the wrong selection for Word instead of getting office. I thought I was getting OneNote but was mistaken.
    This is a lifetime error.
Thank you for clearing this up anyway.

I just checked. Your version has Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote. Start OneNote from your Office start menu entry.

EDIT - seems you have now sorted it.

Click the Office icon, not OneNote.

There is Upload center and Language under MS Office tools.

However, when I click on the red Office I get a screen as you see. it seems to be a promo. I tried entering my key for Word and it was rejected after sending me to other sites.

Why are you trying to start Word? It's OneNote you want and its icon is on the top row. Once you have extracted text from whatever picture file you paste into OneNote, the text will be in your clipboard from where you can paste it into Word or whatever you want.

I did click on OneNote at the top. I then pasted the selection into the page of OneNote. I then pasted it into Word but it was not editable. However think you have helped enough and I do appreciate it. I will work on it. I find this a very awkward way MS has as compared to the older way. It hints at promotion.
    Thank you sir.

Let me have one more go, as the procedure is so very simple -

    - Create a .jpg of the document you want to edit
    - Open OneNote from Office and drag or c&p the .jpg into OneNote
    - Right click the pic in OneNote and from the popup menu click Copy text from picture
    - Open Word
    - Ctrl V to paste the text into the Word document.

This works, be careful to follow it precisely

I followed your directions to a t, Bernie.

Success!! I downloaded 20116 and it works. I hope being 2016 security is not compromised.
Thank you so much for your support and time.

I bought 2019 MS Office Home and Student but tried the 2016 free OneNote download which finally worked.
Mine 2019 is a one time purchase for life of the product. I forgot the cost as I got it years ago although it says 2019 in tiny numbers which I circled. It is a download into which you place the characters.
Thanks, me too as I just saved a lot of typing and I am a hut and peck typist.

Keeping with the thread, I finally decided not to have two suites in my machine so removed 2016 and kept 2019.

Then I installed Chrome's extension Copyfish to perform OCR which I really like.

I have the Copyfish extension installed for Firefox.
    It's a great OCR utility.
