Computer seems to be having an odd problem. I have ran all of the microsoft updates so it is current on its updates.

Problem:When I go to try and add a printer and click on local printer the window stops responding.

Solutions tried: Running all vista updates. Disabling UAC, Bypassing the install and just running straight from the usb to install (locks up as well), Getting new manufactorer drivers, Installing as administrator, beating the keyboard, Trying a different printer, trying with the printer plugged in and trying with it not plugged in, letting the unresponsive window to sit for over an hour.

    Printer: Hp Photosmart 4280n
    Windows: Vista 32 Home Premium
    Port: USB

If anyone knows a solution I will dance at your wedding! I have spent the last 3 days trying to fix it myself with no such luck. Thanks in advance!

    Hi

Plug in the printer, and go to device manager. Look for your printer. Will have a yellow /!\ next to it.

    Right click > uninstall driver.

Now, unplug the printer. Download the latest drivers, and install it. Then, when it says to plug in the printer, do so.

Drivers are not showing a "!" and have been downloaded from manufactorers website and are the most recent versions.

It is recognized the printer no problem. It just won't add it to the printer list. Like I said before. Even if i disconnect the printer I have this issue trying to add a local printer. This also occurs with multiple printers. So I'm pretty sure it has something to do with the OS.

Caliban I don't need no steenkin' title!

I've had several problems with Vista and the F4280 All-In-One...few things you might try:

    1. Make sure you completely uninstall any HP drivers, software, and folders before attempting to install new drivers...

    2. If you dig down in the HP site's driver sections, there's a "Connectivity Patch" available - it might address your issues...

    3. Open a Support Chat with an HP tech - I know, it's a bear to deal with those guys sometimes, but on one occasion I was able to get a revised Vista driver for an F4280 which was certainly better than their usual software...

Does the account you use require you to have administrator rights to install the printer?

    Are the printer "services" enabled?

Try clearing unwanted temporary files and trying again.

You did install the software before you tried to add a printer or connected it by USB to the computer didn't you?

If not, you have a lot of failed installs that need to be cleaned off before you attempt to install it again.
Contact HP by email and see if they have a cleanup tool that will remove partial entries that might be causing your problem.
I've been looking but so far I don't see any.
