I just tried udating my computer to windows 7 professional 64 bit. I do fine with installation until i try to update my graphics driver, when this happens I get stuff with just the desktop. Nothing else will load, no icons r anything else. I can get into safe mode just fine, its just normal boot, I cannot get anything except for desktop. ALso in windows index, the card is not recognised, it is recognised in device manager, but not in the index. Someone please help me with this. I have a HIS isilence 5 card, this is just a month or two old card. I have 4 gigs of RAM installed. Everythng was running fine until I tried to upgrade to 64 bit, and it will load normally until i do update on graphics driver.

Go to the video card chip mfr.'s website (www.nvidia.com or www.amd.com if it's an ATI) and choose the option to detect your card and automatically download/install the latest drivers. If this doesn't work, please post a reply and other forum members may have alternate ideas.

    Hope this helps. :)

this is one of the first things I tried. I didnt work. Everything works fine when I dont update this driver, also in device manager it just shows standard vga monitor, not my card. NOt sure if I put this before. Thanks for the help guys. Sorry, in safe mode after I update driver, it shows my card, in regular mode, after restore point, its just standard vga monitor, this is what I meant to say, sorry.

Check that you have the correct motherboard chipset drivers installed and updated (it's also a good idea to check for a BIOS update too). Once the (updated) chipset drivers are installed and you're rebooted, try running the (ATI/AMD?) installer again.

Which motherboard is it exactly + details on the exact graphics card would be good too; there are a few (rare) traps to watch out for.

the motherboard is an asus p5qe. Im scared to try to do a BIOS update, I absolutely do not want to screw up this computer. I updated the driver again from device manager, under standard vga monitor, then went into safe mode and ran driver sweeper. It now shows my card, which is an amd radeon 6600 series. A his Isilence 5 to be exact. I hope this helps. I am trying to run updates around that one particular one also.

Well, I updated everything except for things for the motherboard. I ran driver cleaner, wiped all amd/NVidia traces off, re downloaded newest driver, same problem. any ideas anyone? I am so frustrated.

ok, to add to the last post. I unistalled/re installed within device manager, this did not work. I took the card out after driver update, when the computer loaded, it did the same thing. No welcome screen then back to wallpaper with no icons or taskbar, yet, right after the card was re inserted, the mouse pointer came back plus the monitor settings were back to what they are supposed to be. now I am back to restore without the driver update. it is labeled under vgasave under properties in the display under control panel. please tell me someone can get something with this to help me fix this problem. also, when the driver is updated, within safe mode I guess it isn't showing as downloaded? because I can roll back driver to boot into windows normally, I have to use restore point to get back to being able to normal boot.

In #5, you ran DriverSweeper from Safe Mode then you said it showed your card

In #6, you said you ran 'driver cleaner' to remove nVidia/AMD drivers, after which, your card is no longer shown.

    Is the above correct?

Keep it simple; dump the 'utilities', install the chipset drivers first, reboot, install the AMD/ATI drivers.

I found the problem on another forum. I have my computer hooked up to my HDTV, when I update the driver, it was running into my TV as the main moniter, not my actual monitor. Thank you guys for helping me. I was getting so frustrated and at my wits end with this problem. Thank you so much again for your help and support
