For a while now I've been using a USB headset that came with Rosetta Stone for chatting over Skype and such. It usually takes a minute or two for my computer to switch over to it, from the monitor's speakers. I figure(d?) this was normal. Then, last night, they completely ceased functioning during a Skype call. Everything went wonky from there. When adjusting the volume in my Taskbar, the tone sounded fine from my monitor's speakers- but youtube was silent, and iTunes froze up whenever I tried to play anything; the sound on my computer seemed totally screwed. Skype wasn't working right at all, and several restarts of the program, and a reinstall, changed nothing. Chrome wouldn't load most of the pages I was trying to navigate to.

So I tried doing a System Restore; it failed, something about a 0x8000ffff error, which I have no idea what even means. And yet, now everything seems to be working fine.

A tech-savvy friend thinks it was just a memory leak; is he right or do I have some software issues that need to be taken care of?

It is possible that you have a failing RAM module. Download MemTest86 in your choice of format and run the extended test on it. Let it go through at least 7 passes as it seems the 7th pass is the most critical. All of the formats on the download page will create bootable media (CD/Flash drive/floppy).
