    Hi,

Does anyone know anything about "OE Classic" it is a email program that looks like old Outlook Express. I have some clients that just will not change from Outlook Express, but they need something that will work on Windows 7 / 8.

I was wondering if this might work.

    Thanks

This is not accurate - take a look at OE Classic download page http://www.oeclassic.com/download - which states the following:
"Works on Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, Windows 2000."

Even without this notification - Win8 is like Win7 without Start menu so everything that works on Win7 usually works on Win8 too.

Like I wrote - almost anything that works on Win 7 will work on Win 8 so it very well applies to December 2012 version of OE Classic too (and also 2011 version too). I happen to be a long-time Windows programmer and I can tell for sure that any program that writes user data to "AppData" (as OE Classic does) (AppData exists since Win98) folder and uses HKCU registry key will work on Win 8. I merely pointed out this generalized fact.

Microsoft started to force programs to write to this location since the introduction of the UAC and that was in Windows Vista (anything that didn't raised UAC prompt). In fact, many programs even started to do installation into AppData instead of ProgramFiles folder to allow self-modification but without UAC prompt. So, anything that was actually designed for Win 7 will work normally on Win 8 - aside from the low-level system stuff which this program doesn't fall into.

Additionally, Win8 shares almost identical API to Win 7. The main difference is absence of Start menu which has been replaced with Start screen but which has very similar function (if programs write to start menu their shortcuts will appear on start screen instead). There is also a full-screen mode which really does require special form of applications, but OE Classic is a regular "desktop" application. You are welcome to try out December 2012 version on Windows 8 if you don't believe me. If it is unavailable take just about any regular program designed to work with Windows 7 and you'll see it works normally in desktop mode of Windows 8. For this reason, it is only a marketing "trick" to advertise a program that works on Windows 8 because vast majority of them already do anyway.
