My client has just got a new laptop. I set her email up on Windows Live Mail in Windows 7, and copied all the required settings, email, address books from Outlook Express on XP.
I got a call this morning saying she gets the emails through on Outlook Express but not on Windows Live Mail! I have gone through all the settings, and they're the same for the laptop and the desktop. Why is this?
Also, she has two email addresses, when she changed from Orange to BT. Can I set them both to appear in the same inbox like they are in OE?

If your client wants to be able to receive and deal with mail on either machine she needs to set the accounts up as IMAP accounts, not as POP accounts. With POP the first machine to access the mailbox downloads the mail to its local folders, after which the mail will not be accessible from the other machine.

You can have multiple email accounts in both OE and WLM.

Are there instructions on how to set up IMAP accounts in OE and WLM?

Question: I have got Thunderbird installed on all my machines, so how come I get the same emails on all of my machines? (It is set up as POP)

When you set up an account you are asked to specify whether it is POP or IMAP, simple as that. The other requirement is to set the incoming imap server name for your ISP, which you can obtain from your ISP's website - something like imap.company.co.uk instead of pop.company.co.uk.

If you are able to read the same emails in pop accounts on different machines it is because you were offered and accepted an option to leave a copy of all messages on the server. It's another way of handling this situation but, compared with IMAP, rather clumsy imo.

So she can get the same messages on both, do I have to modify her account to IMAP on OE and set up a new IMAP account on WLM, or leave POP on OE and change the account to IMAP on WLM?

Both clients need to be set up as IMAP accounts. The POP accounts have to be removed, as they can't be changed from one to the other. Once she has used IMAP successfully she won't bother with POP again.

She is with BT, and I have just discovered that BT doesn't support IMAP!

    Oops - I didn't read all of it - sorry :-o

That's unbelievable. Thank goodness I'm not with BT.

She will have to use the option to leave a copy of everything on the server - unless they don't support that either rolleyes

So, what about this post (bottom of page):

    Hello,

I checked their servers again after seeing the linkback.

You are correct, they no longer support IMAP connections.

Another option is to set up a gmail account. These can be set to use the 'proper' email address and do support IMAP. I have found gmail suits me better than any email client and no longer use one at all, yet to my correspondents nothing appears to have changed.
