OE6 to OE6 on new machine .dbx files not recognized

Old machine Win 2000 died - hard failure, smoke, ozone, etc

New machine win xp Pro etc fairly modern

Both ran Outlook Express 6

User never 'exported' anything from OE6 before the machine died, thus no .pst file.

Address Book moved to new machine, no sweat.

Tried to move .dbx. Failure. Depending on config [old drive as slave, new drive, copy files, etc], OE6 seems to clobber all .dbx files somehow. If I remove the old drive, and just boot the new XP drive, the copied-over .dbx files [mail folders] are on the C drive, but OE6 can't deal with them.

What am I missing here? OE6 sees the address book just fine, but cannot see folders. And it has me spooked... it clobbers thing with no warning

 

Are you using the OE import wizard and pointing it to the .dbx files on the old drive? If you just copy the old OE folders to the new drive, they probably won't work. You need to use the import wizard and point it to the .dbx files.....

got it done. the issue with 'import' is, so far as I can discern, it can't work with raw *.dbx files. it simply does not see them or deal with them. it works with, essentially, a backup [called 'export'] that stores a big .pst index file. this guy never did that, and when his system crashed, it corrupted the folders.dbx index file. the trick was to both copy over the old folders *.dbx individual folders, then delete the newly-created folders.dbx file on the new system, then re-open OE6 so it would index all the folders once again [it sees them as 'new' though they're old]. then just setup the account detail if not already done.
