My main PC has XP Home SP2 and I have the OEM setup disk. As I make daily NT backups (including System State) my strategy in case of disaster would be to re-install XP from the setup disk, then restore from the last backup.

We are now buying a laptop (Lenovo) with XP Home pre-installed (but no disk). In case of a disaster with that, could I re-install from my other disk (but quote the product key affixed to the Lenovo) and then restore the last backup from that?

FWIW my son (who works for a store selling PC's) says that the OEM setup disks themselves are the same but, obviously, you must use the correct key as fixed to the PC. Is he right?

The new laptop will/ should have a recovery partition ...copy it to disc.
Or download Acronis True Imagew ver. 7 (now freeware - at their site) and a good dvd burning software, and you can make a true image recovery partition as well as a boot dvd.
