I've never had to buy an OEM OS before. My understanding is you can only install it on once machine.

I want to get Windows Home Server OEM, but I expect to use it on an old machine for now, and build a new server in a year or so... is there any way to transfer it from the old rig to the new one without re-buying?

I've googled, but there is so much FUD regarding OEM software I figured here would yield a better answer.

    Thanks in advance.

Pretty much bang on, OEM licences are different to retail and sadly unless you have a hardware failure and have to replace a part, in which you likely due to the PC not having same ID code, need to call MSFT support to have it reactivated.

Sadly just transfering or updating the PC with the OEM licence on it will require you to buy a new licence, a pitfall of OEM software, but also why they are cheaper to buy than retail.

But they will allow a reinstall if your motherboard fails?

It's not like they can verify it, do they just usually allow one complementary reinstall? or tell you to buy another one?

Yes as you will need to call them up and give a code, then they check this against activation records, in some instances they will activate it if you are swapping PCs due to a failure in the old one, but maybe only once or twice, if your moving the software multiple times they wont.

Nope they cannot verify if your hardware broke or not, which is a tricky problem as at times it all depends on, who you get on the phone and how you word your question on re-activation (more often than not they do re-activate it and chatting with some WHS folk they not had problems with OEM being reactivated if updating say a motherboard), nope sadly no complimentry re-install.

One more simple question, if you call them up are you supposed to pretend that you are building the machine for sale or do they consider it fine to build for personal use?

I am always honest with them. Saves any possible lawsuits.

The OEM licence for XP states that you must be a computer reseller, system builder, OR, and this is the biggie: A software installer. Therefore, you can buy an OEM copy of XP for anything, and as long as you install it yourself, it is legal. Also, it doesn't state anything about who the system should be for, just that if you resell it, you are responsible for end user support.

I would agree with all of the comments other made above, not need to lie, if you need to move the licence to another PC, tell them majority of the time they will re-activate, but if you start doing this alot, they will reconcider as its well within the licence EULA of the OEM you bought.

TBH, if your building another WHS box in a year or twos time (and sell on the old box and gain some funds towards new build costs), you may well wish to get a newer version of WHS or other Open Source software, as development doesnt stand still and 2yrs is rough release time for main OS software, not looked at the WHS project timeline for a while, but its actively being pushed forward.
