    Hey there,

I have Microsoft Office Professional 2003, for work which uses a volume licence key, for the education wing. Its the Microsoft Professional Enterprise Edition 2003 this is spread over 3 Blue labled C/D's - from October 2003 if thats any help.

I would like to be able to use or copy the install files so that some of the Tutors can micromanage there students learning, adding, removing or even repairing Word, Excel, Outlook ETC.. features as required.

There is a tutor only accessable folder on the training server which would be the best location for these files, as it only means installing the files in one location and its also not that heavily accessed, at least in this point in time.

Can some kind person please advise of the files I need to upload to a folder I will create on the training Server. Taking care of the permissions etc... isnt a worry just the actual names of the install files (msi ??) - or alternatively using the ADD remove components to Office 2003 - using the add remove office component feature - and pointing to a folder on the training server.

So in effect which files do I need to copy, so I can direct the tutors to deinstall or update the existing installation even repair, for the Office 2003 professional existing installation, then i can tell the tutors to look for them in a certain folder more than likely at this stage on the Training Server.

To be clear, I am not asking how to download the updates or service packs for Office 2003 and then deploying these from a folder on the server.

I am looking for the original setup files? Or in effect to copy the original install files to a central point in a folder, on the training server.

The intent is that the tutors can individually configure / manage the installed Office apps or even repair them if there are issues.

Thanks in advance for any help in this one.

o.k on any given version of Office with the exception of Office 2007 is there a file or folder that holds like an office equivalent of cab files or similar install.

    Cheers

i used to tutor college math (work/study) and the only thing i could do was create docs for my personal use with specific students; couldn't save them on the college's servers, either. had to save to removable media. most institutions have a "deep freeze" that will only make unauthorized installations/changes work until the regular network reboot that evening or next day.

only the college's IT people had permissions to do anything like install, add/remove components, update or repairs. they would also be the only ones with access to the original setup files. you can't get them unless you already have them, or the install cd, AND the VLK.

trying to do it anyway would have been a termination offense & possible expulsion for me. would have been the same in my later professional career.

if you're the owner of the product and VLK, or have those admin permissions, then you definitely don't want my help on how-to. otherwise, you can't do what you're talking about...at least not where i've ever worked/studied. the more i look at what you're asking, the more i think you do NOT want to try that.

if i'm wrong, someone will ask you for more info and help you.

    Thanks for the info Cake,

We train in the microsoft office suite, as one part of training aspect of this business. All the training tutors have a minimusm of 8+ years in training and Microsoft office products and as such are familiar with, or could pick up relatively quickly, or I could type a quick doc on a how to. Otherwise I would have just refused the initial request for this to be done.

The training wing has its own dedicated server on a completely different network segment, any access to data is completely seperate from the business wing.

I dont think that our free Volume Licence Key agreement would be made void if the install files were put on a seperate dedicated training network segment, as the data can not be accessed by the business segment.

Most I.T pros would consider leaving any management or alterations made by staff as crazy, sooner or later there will be an issue, and the I.T person will not be aware of the issue or how it may have been created.

However we actually provide training in the MS Office products and the training staff are very familiar with file management and installation of software, if still not a little loose on clicking the odd popup here and there.

So I at least at this stage, think that the files just need to be put up to the Training server, and the path made known to the staff, so if there are issues they can navigate to the path and add or remove - even repair Word or Excel or add clipart etc...

I will be leaving this company in December :cry and my position will not be replaced, so the tutors need to be able to self govern / manage the classrooms software to some extent, doing this would give them the freedom to do so. The alternative is waiting for sometime for a contractor or third party person to come in and attend to their issue, thus slowing down the students progress. The staff are capable if directed in how to find the folder on the server, that wont be an issue, just finding the install files for me to copy up for them to do so is the current issue.:confused

Anyways thanks for the input.. L8r:wave
