I have used Office without any hassle for several years in Win7, but recently I re-arranged the content of the hard drive so that downloads would go into a separate partition. Since then, when I want to open a WORD or EXCEL file, there is minutes of delay while Office 'configures' itself. How can I restore proper functioning ?

Press the Windows key + R to bring up the Run box and enter eventvwr.msc then OK.
Expand Application and Service logs and see if any errors are listed under the Microsoft Office categories.
If there's any errors listed, then for each error select the details tab -> XML view and right click 'select all' then 'copy' and paste the errors into a notepad file.
Save the file to somewhere convenient, then attach it to your next post.

More detail about exactly what you did might be helpful. Did you partition your hard drive for this purpose? If so, how did you then "re-arrange the content of the hard drive so that downloads would go into a separate partition"? Are you sure you only affected the downloads folder and no other folders? How much free space do you have on the partition where your OS and programs are installed?

I have fixed the problem in WORD (and maybe in Excel) with the following :
    open Registry and go to
    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Options
Click in the right pane to trigger a display of 'new'
click on that and then click on DWORD (32bit) Value
Substitute NOReReg for the highlit 'New value #1'
Right-click NoReReg; select Modify and the change the highlit '0' to '1'; click OK

This is a preliminary report; time will tell how excel fares.
Nullptr - I appreciate your effort; but do not want to reciprocate with what you request, as I'm obviously already on the road to recovery. Excel is behaving slightly differently and I will make a new post about that if it is warranted.
Usafveteran, I considered repartitioning, but chose a tried and true (for me) method of cloning instead. The actual detail I can tell you if you insist, but for now (3am) I just wanted to report the progress I have made.

    Thank both of you.
