Office 2010 will not Install - Administrative Permissions?

I have been using Office 2003 for years on my computer running XP. I decided it was time to upgrade to Office 2010 and purchased it with two seats. It installed fine on my laptop, but I've been having a heck of a time trying to get it installed on my main computer. It installs about 3/5 of the way and then reverses back out and I get an error message that I don't have sufficient permissions to access the registry. I have spent many hours researching possible solutions and trying them out - none worked. This system has always been set up to log on as administrator when turned on (which after reading here I'm discovering is probably not the smartest thing). Here are some of the suggestions I tried that failed:

    - Renamed the Microsoft Help folder.
    - Downloaded and ran the SubInACL tool As Outlined Here which is supposed to repair file and registry permissions.
    - Checked for Malware including running Bit Defender.
    - Tried to set up for a clean boot (to eliminate some non-Microsoft services that might be interfering with the installation process) but got an error after trying to apply the changes in the System Configuration Utility box: "An Access Denied error was returned while attempting to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator account to make the specified changes."
    - Tried to run Windows System File Checker Utility which is supposed to examine and repair corrupt operating system files. From Microsoft:
"System File Checker gives an administrator the ability to scan all protected files to verify their versions. If System File Checker discovers that a protected file has been overwritten, it retrieves the correct version of the file from the cache folder (%Systemroot%\System32\Dllcache) or the Windows installation source files, and then replaces the incorrect file. System File Checker also checks and repopulates the cache folder. You must be logged on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to run System File Checker. If the cache folder becomes damaged or unusable, you can use the sfc /scannow, the sfc /scanonce, or the sfc /scanboot commands to repair its contents."
When running, if it asks you to insert your Windows XP installation CD, then supposedly it does need to replace some files. When I install my disc, my system says that it is not the right disc even though I know it's what I used to install XP originally!

    - Installed and ran RatsCheddar. This is a policy Controller program written by Rathat to remove certain restrictions on XP systems often disabled by malware. It had no effect.

I'm at a total loss now on what else to try. Maybe the answer is to finally upgrade to Windows 7 or 8, but I was hoping to get this installed now before I make that jump.

    Thanks for any help!
    - Mark

Do you have SP3 for Windows XP installed? Did you remove Office 2003 before trying to install Office 2010? Is you computrer a 32-bit or 64-bit system?

Yes, SP3, and system is 32 bit. I did not uninstall 2003. The 2010 installation disc asks if this is an upgrade, so I didn't think I needed to. Also, I'm afraid now that if I do uninstall it that I won't be able to re-install it if need be.

Thanks for the link AltBo. A lot going on there in that thread, but looks to be some good information on things I can look at and try. I'll need to really sit down and go through it all.

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Mr. Six...

That's exactly what I thought about it too. If I were in your shoes, I wouldn't have been expecting so much for this type of fix...

    :confused
