recently whenever i try to open up any office programs ie word, excel an automatic microsoft installation icon pops up:

    microsoft office professional edition 2003

click ok, to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'PRO11.MSI' in the box below.

anyone have any idea what this is or how to shut it off? i received this office from my university through their license, but i've never had this problem before

Office is trying to instal a component that wasn't installed at the initial setup

Put the disk in the drive and click ok.

ALternativly if you have enough disk space, goto add/remove programs and 'change' the office 2003 components and make sure everything is installed on local computer.

one possible I have come across when you get that message when trying to install a component that was not defaulty installed "Pro11.MSI" cannot be found is that the Office installation files are generally instaled in an office hidden folder on your C: Drive which sadly if a new component it needed or an update has been done is that the installer cannot find that file so try the below,

goto Tools > Folder Options > Click View tab and find and check "show hiddend files and folders" and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" > apply and try again to open an office application.

also if you have the office CD, pop it in and locate when you get the prompt the Office folder with PRO11.MSI

i followed the above procedure, but it still didn't fix the problem. i'm not sure if this helps, but it only does it on my wife's user account (xp pro) and not on mine (the administrater account), also i noticed when her word file does come up it shows "scanning for viruses" down where the page number would regularly be shown

thanks mata, but even though that article seemed to describe my problem it didn't provide a resolution. the thing is i am not sure why this is only happening on my wife's user account

i'm not sure if this has anything to do with it, but she just informed me that when she logs in notepad pops up with this text:

    [.ShellClassInfo]
    LocalizedResourceName=@%SystemRoot%\system32\shell32.dll,-21787

Is your wifes account a limited account ? She may not have permissions on the Folder where Offfice holds offline instalation files.

If she is a limited user, can you temporarily make her an administrator.

    OR

Log in as administrator and rerun the office installtion (From add/remove programs select change for office 2003) Make sure ALL commponents are selected as 'Run From This Computer' not 'run when first needed' or 'do not install this component' Then finish the installation reboot and try again.

i tried what you suggested running them ALL as 'from this computer', but the installation is interrupted with the same error as microsoft cannot find this file?

'click ok, to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'PRO11.MSI' in the box below.'

Put your Office CD in the drive and then navigate to the file on the CD when it says this. I think what has happened is you have installed Office but have later removed the offline Instalation Files.

Try the Detect and Repair command on the Help menu of Office. Using this command corrects identifiable problems such as missing files, corrupt files, registry omissions, or damaged registry entries. It replaces the .msi file if it was deleted, damaged, or is the wrong version.

Using the Detect and Repair command usually requires you to provide the installation CD for the version of Office currently installed on your computer.

so there is no way to fix it for the most part without the installation cd? err, that means i'll have to wait till school starts next month

Did you recently run a Registry Cleaner App?

If so, you might have deleted a key needed by Office.

Most make backups. You could replace a deleted key if this is the problem.

Apps like CCleaner and so on have Registry cleaners. Have you run something similar recently?

CCleaner backs up if it is set to.

You can restore any recent cleanings. This could help if you can go back to the date before you started having problems.

This might not be the fix you need but is worth a try.
