Office XP Stalls

    Hi.

I recently updated to MS Office XP from Office 97 (on a Win 98 SE system) and what a disappointment!

My main problem is that Word has slowed down to about half the speed it used to have, not only in loading but also in performing various operations such as saves. To top it off, the program lags and stalls. I'll be typing away, and suddenly Word just stops so that nothing I type or save or click on shows up. The curser stays a vertical line. Then, after a few seconds, suddenly Word will come back to life and show everything I just did. The letters I typed, etc. will now appear.

This is not fun. Anybody here have this problem or know of a cure?

    Thanks,

Yes, particulary amount of RAM and CPU speed. Word has always been a memory hog.

Sorry. Pentium 3 600 with 384 MG Ram. I had 256 and added another 128. It helped--made Word load faster, but the stall while working in Word has gotten worse, not better.

I'm running Clipmate 6 and using it instead of the Word XP clipboard. Clipmate has always been an erratic program. Do you think it could be causing the Word problems? If so, do you know of another clipboard extender that will let me cut and paste literally 100s of bits of text?

    Thanks again,

Try uninstalling Clipmate temporarily and see if that helps.

I shut down Clipmate and everything ran fine...except that when I tried to exit Office XP my computer hung and I had to reboot.

    Sigh...

Maybe I'm flogging a dead horse. That is, maybe my computer is just getting old and losing it. But after going through all kinds of trouble Office XP, particularly Word XP, is giving me more trouble.

Not only is it stalling and hanging now, but it has taken to refusing to open certain docs. Instead of opening them it hangs and I need to reboot. The docs open in other machines I've transferred them to and over my home network on these same other machines, one using Office 2000 and one using Office 97.

Size doesn't have anything to do with which docs cause the problem. It seems entirely random. I've reinstalled Office 97 but that's done nothing. I've uninstalled Norton Anti-Virus, which caused the other problems I've reported here in the past week or so and replaced it with AVG's free anti-virus. According to AVG I have one file with something called Downloader.Small.5.Y. That file is now quarantined. Could it be causing the behavior of Word? If so, how do I rid myself of the effect? A search of the virus name hasn't shown me enough to go on.

    Thanks again,

    I have solutions to share!

The problem of Word not opening certain documents has been solved. My default printer had been switched to one on a network for which my computer doesn't have the drivers, and evidently my symptoms are a common result of that. Switching to a different default printer has taken care of the situation and I can still use the network printer on as needed basis via printer set-up.

I've also stopped the stalling in Word XP by going to Options and unclicking "autosave backups for restore." It was the autosaving of backup copies that stopped things in their tracks.

    Pass it on.
