so the other day i was having javascript issues, only i thought it was IE issues, so i futily tried to rip IE completely off my hard drive. i went so far as to try and purge it from my registry. Only problem is, for some reason there were AVI and other DIV references in my registry folders pertaining to IE. Now whenever I try to play a video file other than quicktime, i get error messages; "class not registered' when I try to play divx videos from WMP, and other 'a registry entry is corrupt' when i try using other media players. So how do I pull my foot out of my ass on this one?

Ack: I have never heard of a succesfull uninstall of IE out of Windows -could you maybe try reinstalling IE via http://www.microsoft.com/security/bulletins/200407_windows.mspx
    ?
    -just a thought.

This may be wayyyyy too simple -but have you a) tried System Restore. or b) tried reloading a back-up of your Registry?

Then perhaps (Please someone else step-in if they have a better solution!) a Windows repair is in order: 1) put your WinXP CD in your CD player; 2) let it boot via the drive that the Windows CD is in; 3) select the Repair option.
I'd suggest that this is the LAST thing you want to do -but I do believe it'll work.

    would that require formatting anything?

Nope -no formating required. Just follow the steps in my last post and you should loose no data. -That being said BACK-UPS ARE ALWAYS RECOMMENDED -just in case something goes wrong. But I seriously doubt it will.

Put the CD in the drive, and go into BIOS setup and change the boot order do CDROM is first. I can't go into more detail than that, because I've not used your computer before.

Is it not possible to simply navigate to the add/remove programs in the control panel, hit add/remove windows components, then uninstall internet explorere? I remember accomplishing this feat a while back and I successfully uninstalled IE.

Is your XP CD bootable? If its a slipstream it might not bot bootable. If its a normal XP CD and not a CDR then you should be fine. Make sure youre using the correct CD drive if you have more than one.

And yes, it was possible to remove IE.............

In windows 95. In XP its core components are so interwoven with the OS there is no way to completley remove it, so its not worth the effort.
