 I have a HP533w...it periodically loses the dang sound card or something. AND it did it again! The precise thing with the yellow exlamation point is Avance Audio AC97. I have uninstalled and then rebooted and when it reinstalls it STILL says "device can not start"! I have tried unplugging my speakers, and I've tried doing a system restore dated yesterday. My sound worked this morning. ALl to no avail! My compuetr is over a year old so HP is no help. Someone recommended me to you guys! Please help me!

    Try System Restore.

    That would be fastest.

Have you tried actually reinstalling the drivers?

There is usually an HP folder on root of your C:\ drive.

    Search through there.

Done both of these to now avail. When I uninstall the driver and reboot...Windows reinstalls it and it's still messed up. I did 2 restores! ARGH! ANy other ideas?

I believe what Adryn wanted you to do was re-install the drivers from scratch. Do not just let Windows re-use the ones that are already there. You may also want to check this link out: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?lc=en&cc=us&docname=bph07154&product=90862&dlc=en&lang=en

You may also want to check HP to see if newer drivers are available.

Just a thought but you might want to make sure the card is properly seated.??

That won't work meandog. This particular machine has the sound onboard.

ok guys...what directory? I am clueless.....I dont know who to re-install from scratch first of all. I did re-install a newer version from a link that HP emailed me and that one says there are no sound mixers to run it...therefore IT can not start........argh!!! I am willing to call one of you on my dime if I need to...I am going nuts here! any takers?

    We fixed it.

The onboard sound was set to Auto in the BIOS, but didn't work until she set to Enabled.
