how come every one has Vista but the poor? how come last month I just finally actually stompped my 266 pentium. I asked someone else about Vista and literally was put down...he said..."unfortunately i need use XP at work" ....seems I cant get (or anyone) an honest answer about the new! I suppose we all should diiss those with 95, or 98....
no names mentioned but a question is a question....show your specks but dont rub it in with insults..
he does know what $ means in microsoft...
how about some clear info on how people here like Vista? Let alone xp, 98 , or those still using 95?
    They are still there!!
    my goodness!
    so how is Vista?

I liked vista very much. Nice UI, excellent features.. I think there is more good than bad and even the bad isn't that bad.. it just could be tweaked a little.. but hey, that's where developers come into play :D

Anything Microsoft will have big wholes, and massive patches to follow. Plus the platform isn't as good as a UNIX platform, but hey... it's Microsoft.

Vista.... nice looking and all, but it's not much different really, unless you're a power user, or a rich-guy/gal, then you don't need it.

    XP's just fine.

PLEASE get off the Microsoft bashing bandwagon.. NO software company is perfect.
Comparing UNIX to Windows is like comparing a hammer and a TV.. just don't *sigh*

Vista is fine, no different really to when XP came out, as it too had poor driver and software support until the devs got their asses in gear, plus XP only IMO became a better product after SP1, like all Operating Systems and software they are constantly getting updates and patches, UNIX, Firefox, Windows, Apple OS are all the same in that respect.

The last release of Vista in 5744 is fine for me and I measure it on could I use it every day and will it do all the tasks I need it to do without having to resort to XP, yes is the answer all harware is supported for my Laptop and all the software I need works... actually using it today in work for a test run of a powerpoint doc on an OHP.

Just take with a massive pinch of salt all the rumors surrounding Vista, most are wrong or way out of date.

Yes it does now need a fair amount of computing power to run, but I dont hear many gamers moaning about having to buy a new GFX card to play the latest games that need plenty of 3d polygon power! they will happily pay upwards of $300+ to get that new card. Technology moves forward and as a result new hardware requirements are inevitable, early adoption of any new technology is always expensive and no-one has to start with Vista now, while XP SP2 is OK.

Vista is not aimed at power users at all, it is amied at every level of PC user, some of the little reported nice additions to Vista is Help & Support, which has Videos and alot of plain simple explanations to questions many new users may have, ie. One Video goes through the parts of a PC, simple to most on here but not for everyone.

The person who mentioned the $$$ does indeed know what it means, but why use it to spell Microsoft, it may have been the "in" thing to do to follow the rest of the MSFT haters ( who suprisingly the majority of ... Da DA use Microsoft Windows OS's ), but why? Microsoft are just a very sucessful company, started from the ground up, they may have at times do some rather doubious things but EVERY company does, plus I have to applaude Bill Gates in the amount of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ he actually gives away to worthy causes the world over, not many CEOs can say that.

My specs that are running Vista are:

    Compaq R4065ea laptop
    AMD64 3500+
    1GB Ram
    100GB HD
    Ati x200 dedicated 128MB
    15.4 Widescreen

and it runs both x86 and x64* Vista well.

*not all drivers supported as yet, but this is not a Microsoft problem but that of lazy 3rd party devs, waiting until Vista is retail before updating, which many of you early adopters to Vista will find out, may happen to you.

I feel stupider for reading this thread. Damn. Linux works great as does Macintosh. Software availability is poor on both operating systems. When you talk money, you can buy an Emachines and run Linux if you like, total cost around 400 bucks (of course that includes XP which you can ditch). Priced a Mac lately? You think Vista is expensive? Macintoshes biggest problem is the cost of their machines. They can run all the commercials they want, show me a Macintosh capable of running the newest software and games, for 400 dollars. It does not exist. You can spend all the time you want comparing them, bottom line is that the least computer savvy people, and the vast majority, are on Windows based machines, making them a big target. Mac and Linux are so small (maybe 5% each) that it is not profitable to target them. If you started a new business, would you go after 5% share or 90% share. 5% if your a moron and want to lose money. I hope Mac gets big someday, so you can see it. It is already proven there are more vulnerabilties for these operating systems already, though still very small. As for Unix, might try running a Unix server sometime, they get hacked frequently and release security fixes on a regular basis.

If you go on the internet and want to send and receive data, there will always be holes that people exploit. I dont care what your running.

@jazagod, I believe you can still get RC1 as it seems still open at Microsoft. If you have a friend with RC2 just copy his disk and use the key you got for RC1.

I still can't use my HP scanner or printer in 5744, HP's fault, so I'm still going to use XP for day to day work as Vista will only expire next Jun 1st and if it's still not fixed by then, then I won't buy Vista. Can't afford both at the same time.

    My specs:

    Athlon xp 3200 (socket A).
1.5 gigs of ram (ddr 400)
    6800 (128 megs of ram) (not GS/GT/ultra)
I can play FEAR, Titan quest, Fear expansion demo, Half life 2, Oblivion, civ 4 ALL on Vista.

Only game I have an issue is the built in 3d chess. It runs slowly.

Titan quest has issues in Vista and XP, but I discovered a workaround to get it to umm work. :)

Like MA said, all OS's have software flaws, and when do you see any good software for UNIX? Hardly, thats the answer. And you dont need to be rich to get Vista. Theres a Vista coupon thing coming out, you buy any XP pc that can support Vista and they will send you Vista for a low fee. Its all common sense really, theres no OS that can beat XP. Yea, theres the viruses and millions of malware exploits out there, but hey, thats the price of being the best.

On yet another side note. I installed Fedora core 6 on my pc in my billiard room (I use this computer for playing music). Low and behold, on a fresh install, 12 security updates were needed. FC6 just came out 2 or so days ago. :)

Yes, for whatever reason (guys like this, I guess) people run around screaming about how horrible and insecure Windows is. Im sure Jazagod is well intentioned in his own way, but seriously misinformed. All operating sytems have patches. Unix, Linux, Windows and Macintosh. One is the center of attention.

Take it like you would looking at cars. Everyone compares thhe hottest new cars to an icon, BMW, Lamborghini, Mclaren, etc. Then they say how theirs is better in certain areas. This is all probably true. No difference in this comparison except the obvious slant from people speaking much too loudly about things they frankly dont know enough about.

i became to like Microsoft over time somethings i dont like about them but others i do. they make my most Fav game in the world its the first game i ever played and will never get tired of it. it was Flight Sim3.1 for windows3.1 and now i am getting Flight sim X. people can say what they want about them for what ever reason. i dont really care because they make great software it may be full of holes but hey they fix it over time. right?

i never used a mac and dont think i would ever want one unless they do some changes to the prices and i dont to much care about leaning other OS's. most people in this world dont want something that costs high dollor and takes afew weeks/months to learn they want something cheap and simple. right guys?

anyways can someone tell me if it will work with my pc in my sig? if not what ya think i should upgrade?

You should be OK. Run the evaluation SW on this page. It will give you score on each main component. For example, my score is a 3 because of my crap vid card, the next thing was the CPU at 3,7 Mind you I can run Vista perfectly fine with all the bells and whistles enabled.

I am running Vista on a semi-outdated machine...and it seems to be doing great!! I really like the UI, and the extras like the Problems and Solutions Center, etc.!! I didn't have any trouble with add on peripherals, including my HP Printer, but I know some people are, so until it becomes more mainstream...your not going to see much 3rd party support, but that is to be expected, I suppose!!

XP is still plenty good, and probably will be for awhile. But like me, I'm always curious of the latest innovations, but I suppose that comes from being a geek!!

You can bash microsoft all you want, but as my grandfather always told me....Son, that's just the way things is!! And I gotta say, like Halo...I am very impressed with Bill Gates efforts in the foundation/charity world!!

Vista, for me, has a of 3.6 due to the cpu being the lowest.

I am also one who dabbles in the bleeding edge, when it comes to software.

I run minefield, which is version 3.0 alpha of firefox, as a day to day usage. I've updated every day since phoenix 0.3.
I run thunderbird 3.0 alpha, for my email. I've updated daily, since 0.8 (If I recall correctly).
I run WSH, which is the new windows shell, coming out soon.
I run netframework 3 (beta) (at work) for the new MS xps files.

I've been a beta tester on connect, and beta(dot)microsoft(dot)com, for 2+ years.

When Vista came out, I was very excited. Upgraded my home computer (xp pro), to beta 2, RC1, pre RC2, RC2 (5744). Note, no Format and re-install beween each upgrade.

I am just into new new new.

Sorry for this post not really making any sense. :(

so you dont need to format from xp to Vista? im sure it said it there somewhere, but these forums are more exciting :D

No, you don't need to format the H.D.D., or burn your mainboard at the stake or anything like that. Rumours are only good for one thing - starting more rumours. Suggest fact finding mission will be more productive.;)

But that's not the reason why I'm posting. Just adding that I too, have been Pre-testing Vista, and actually I quiet like it in a lot of ways. Nice 'feel' the G.U.I., (and they got rid of the Microsoft 'tingle' when entering/leaving the O.S. - yay!). As Dave said, driver support is a little lacking at this point in time, but it is still very early days for Vista.

As for people hating Microsoft, or generally anyone who is American and very wealthy - William (Bill) Gates Jr. contributes to charities as said, to the tune of over $400 mil U.S. per year last time I heard, not to mention numerous 'splinter' charity organisations. So unless one has some other way of pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into charities, otherwise Govt. funded, or not at all, then I guess wealth aint such a bad thing after all. ;)

And being that it is an Nvidia (their driver support sucks!!!!) I can't seem to get their beta driver to work so I am stuck using the standard windows video driver, so therefore I can't use the Aero Theme, 3d Flip, etc., and other festures associated with needing necessary minimal of a video card. But atleast it is just this machine...my laptop, using ALL the fancy features, is working sweeeeeeeet!!!!
