Spelling out the specifics would be most helpful and get you more feedback. Better than half the members here won't use the PM system for things like this as it defeats the purpose of the forum as a whole.

 

At one of the sites where I mod, we are trying to ban a guy that has been stalking me. Unfortunately he is on dial up so his IP is changing. To delete his account, ban his addy and nickname would only last for a few minutes as he would just use another addy and change his nick. Need to find a way to ban him permanently.

Anyone know how to attain this?

 

Ahh...this helps out. There are a few options available.

Have you filed a formal complaint with his ISP including proof of the offenses and various ID's? (screen shots, links to threads and/or ID's created...a list of IP's, etc.) This individual is no doubt in violation of his ISP's TOS and most will enforce them after a series of complaints and cut their connection completely...this works really well especially if it's a kid doing it b/c the parents find out and...you get the picture Does the site you mod at have a lawyer on retainer? Also, what type of software does the forum use?

 

Well, the (51 yr. old) guy actually lives right next door to me and is well educated. He never post anything on the boards at all, that would be considered a threat. In real life, that is a different story as he uses materials from my post to start problems for me in town (via way of malicious gossip). He has tried to discredited me in real life and on line as he had been setting me up for months so to isolate me. He knows that there were attempts made to ban him but he ignores them and still rejoins.

I assume the software is SMF .

Well, now you are getting into possible stalking which is a criminal offense. Been there done that and I may be able to guide you in the right direction. As this is a rather personal issue feel free to PM me or email me abbysue @ this domain.


Another option on the forum would be to ban the whole block of IP's however this would prevent others in the same block from connecting to the forum so it's really not recomended...however there are other feasible options...you just have to weigh the pros and cons of it and the site owners would have to make the final decision on it.
