I sure hope this helps... I read the thing on GPU and got thouroughly confused again...but it is almost 6pm and I've had no supper yet, and am becoming thick headed. I can also see where I need to go back and check the box on holding to single core so it will use all four cores on processor.

Nice to be part of this... thanks for the welcome, very much so.

dang(holding the g sound for some time) :drool
with spec's like that you should not have any problems (noticeable slow down/lag) set @ 90% to say 100% (unless gaming online)

I am running an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ and set to 93% (at the moment)
running another program also 24/7 besides the FAH program.

not sure about your gpu card though,I'd have to research.

won't take you no time to be on the front page (top 100 active members)

I too am a little tired or I would do a quick search on your video/gpu card to see if it qualifies.

Noprob, as I said to auggiedoggie other post, it was only approx $2300, I got what I wanted for the first time ever, built it myself and only had minor problems, so I thought I did very well. And I am still only starting to scratch the surface of this thing. I like games, but not online RPG type things. More into stretch my mind see if I can figure things out. I loved Zork, Myst, the follow ups to Myst, etc. I am just getting into digital recording, both audio and video. I am much more a hardware guy than a software and am trying to learn more on the software side, would love to get into making my own games. Do to my poor health I am fairly house bound and the computer is one of my few pleasures, so I made the most of it, with lots of room for expansion. I can put in 4 more fans, 8 more GB ram, 4 more harddrives, two more optical drives, plus two large flash drives lots of USb stuff, if your into hi fi stereo I can make you drool there too, but that took me 20 some odd years to get and piece together. I would love to get my hands on some different hi end speakers, but people selling them want way too much $$ for me. I saw a lady on Ebay had 20,000 vinyl records but she wanted $50,000 and you had to go to her house and remove them...oh for some big bucks and a large moving van and a couple of young strong backs...lol.
    Well enough of that...

Oh Steve, that is a sweet machine! You have a great vid card but I can't help you there as I just know nVidia GPU folding. I really hope Stanford releases an ATI wrapper soon as good ATI cards are currently underperforming with the current client software.

BTW Steve, just call me augie as everyone else does. Less typing too if you're a two fingered hunt and peck like me.;):D

    ATI Radeon 4xxx series GPU

ok done some research and located info for your video card.
looks like a simple download, launch, configure and fold on...
but I noticed it is not advisable or not supposed to run the cpu program while running the gpu program as the gpu uses some of the cpu though the gpu gets the major load of the process and I might add more scientific progress is done on a gpu plus the added benefit of points.
    check out Fred_G
he only uses gpu's (1 in the last 7 days - 2 in the last 50 days) and has only been here since 05.20.09 and this isn't his main team.
I think he likes us cause we all mostly just kicked back types.
Also it is now called the GPU2 for the newer video cards, which allows no interference/interruption should you need to use graphical process as I'm lead to believe the original GPU version has some glitches.

    download from Stanford:

you would used the first High Performance Client listed as you have the ATI Radeon 4xxx series video/gpu card and this is an msi installer (windows specific installer) once done (after configuring) you will see an icon located near the clock side of your taskbar.

I though since you have a quad core cpu you might be able to do the SMP ,but realized this is still in beta and from the reading it is complicated to configure properly, plus I believe it is going out of beta so the beta program will no longer function sometime in July 2009. (I guess they are fix'in to roll out a public version of SMP soon?)

Oh, that's news to me about SMP. I'll be checking out the Stanford forums in the morning. Thanks for the heads up noprob!:)

Erm, not that hard to configure.;)

Please realize I did this on a spot check and had no idea the SMP FAH client was even in beta, plus it seems the problem(s) w/SMP are Windows specific since the program code came from Unix which it rums on with no problems.

Also I missed the 10 minute edit window to add on my previous post that the info for the 4xxx series applies to the 2xxx and 3xxx ATI Radeon HD video cards also.

OK, since I VM SMP fold so this doesn't apply to me, more points than Windows SMP.

Augie and Noprob, your getting into acronyms I have no idea about...lol this is much deeper than I have ever been. If use the folding on my gpu will interfer if I want to use gpu than I will not load that...sorry. I think I will give it a couple of weeks see what sort of feel I get for what I have now then go from there.

Augie...you wouldn't have been stationed in Turkey by any chance? Hd a guy there we call aguie daddy if I remember right. Got to go do some research on some other things now. Take it easy

OK Steve, I also think that's the best way to go. Once you get a feel of how to set up a client and see what points you get from the general 'set and forget' folding then we can bump you up a few notches.;)

I GPU fold on my main machine and it does not interfere with anything, not videos or movies or regular surfing. The only thing that it may interfere with is gaming, so if you game a lot then just suspend the folding while you game and turn it back on when done.

I have done a quick calculation of the minimum points you can get per day based on lesser hardware than yours as no one has posted anything yet on your video card or CPU. So my guesstimate is 6K PPD(points per day) at the very least.

Sorry about all the acronyms and I'll try and keep those to a dull roar.:-o I didn't learn them or how to fold to the max in one day either.:) Here's a wiki on fah acronyms, not all are there but it's a good start and the basics are covered. Fold on man!:cool

Nope, only turkey that I ever saw was on my plate.;):-D

as far as that statement is concerned correct, but I do believe from the spot check on advanced gpu/smp client I did read next month smp goes public=no longer a beta client which stanford is allowing to go a bit more like the first or second week of July, then it no longer functions or there will be no WU's for that client.
I don't recall the exact infos other then what I've already stated.

right now I am taking a break from mowing, some time this evening I will locate the infos concerning the change over concerning the SMP client, on another note, it is only the older version of GPU that had problems not the newer version GPU2 which your video card would pump out the WU's easily Steve, but as you stated to get used of things the cpu client should do well for now.

It's just that the video card (GPU2 client) is able to tackle the processing needed that the cpu client is not able to do.
The graphical processor unit is able to finish a work unit way more complicated in say a week or two, where the same or similiar work unit being processed by cpu would take a month or longer if even able to.

    ok peoples, fold on!

Hey guys... Its been more than a week I know, but I got caught up in life again...lol. I almost completely forgot about this FAH, as I have seen no slow down in anything I have been doing. But I forgot how to find what I am doing??? I never did get back to change that CPU over to all four cores.. I did find and change the darned sleep mode and energy saver crap finally,,wondered if that affected what FAH does? Does shutting off the computer affect it? As I do occasionally shut down for dusting. I think that it will be ok for me to really open this up and let it rip. Plus go ahead and let the GPU go for it too, I found some of my problems were due to this user/administrator baloney am trying to fix that. Thanks in advance for any help here.

You could have five clients running on your rig Steve.

It seems the info I have read is inaccurate/out dated as from reading/learning from gas1can he has two computers running eight clients (2 cpu/2gpu per rig) total.

It won't be long and he shall transport:duck past me in no time.

Have you started a WU on your computer?

Noprob....I thought I did maybe not, these days I am not sure i am even awake at times. ok I found it again,,says that stats are down...changed to use all my cpu shows I have some log time but not sure I understand but thats ok. now I need to downld gpu and get it running with no conflict with cpu I hope someone can help me with that.

Your pm (private message) is turned off Steve in your profile options somewhere?
anyway I would be more then willing to assist in firing up the gpu client on your computer.
I have a Nvidia 8600GT avg. at this post 833 point per 24 hour period.
I wish I had researched this sooner because my out dated cpu's just barely keep me alive on the board.
There is a program called TeamViewer that would allow someone to configure a program on your computer with your permission, but I have only done so on XP,not sure about vista or win7.
Just a suggestion,I would only use 2 of the 4 cores to start concerning your cpu and use/install the gpu client also to keep things cooled down on your rig, then if all is ok temp wise you could go ahead and install another cpu client on the thrid core wait a few days and just keep an eye on things to make sure there is no temperature problems.
This is your computer which you paid for with these high performance clients running it is good karma to be watchful of our investment(s).

Hey...how cool is that...maybe now I can begin to help. Thanks people everyone here for helping to do this. Hey noprob I understand about the looking around in someone elses computer...but I am a little paranoid about that....my bugaboo not anyone elses...don't want to really get into the amount of information that frigging companies and gov. know about people and without their consent...lets just not go there...

That's ok by me as I feel the same "my bugaboo"

on a side note Steve I recall you may have set the client to a low setting such as 70%?
perhaps a higher percentage could be allowed since I believe you stated this wasn't interfering with anything.
