Curious if any of you folks down in the Gulf States have seen anything come ashore yet. What a disaster!! Sounds if you like oysters, better get them now.

According to our news, the slick has reached the shoreline of Louisiana. BP operation. Trust us Brits to funk it up once again.
5,000 barrels of oil a day leaking into the ocean, eleven workers missing. It's scary to think that the rig was a £700m state of the art facility and this can still happen. Fine them, they can afford it from their £3.5 BILLION profit. It's a shame there's going to be a lot of damage that can't be prevented. How come they still can't contain these spills? God knows there's been plenty of them in the past.
Hope it's short lived for everyone's sake.

Yeah WTH, trying to fool everyone by changing their name from British Petroleum to Beyond Petroleum rolleyes
Last time they were in the news they had just opened the first GREEN station in L.A. It wasn't green as yet but the name was pulling in the customers. Guess they'll be in the news for a long time now :(

My heart goes out to the families of the 11 missing.

I used to be in charge of an oil depot and I know first hand what a mess a small Heavy Full oil spill makes on surrounding land. Much less 5,000 barrels a day. The USA states involved will be feeling the effects for years. :cry

BP don't seem to be able to get it right in the oil extraction game.
This is a photo taken by a friend of mine who is a hydraulics engineer just after the Katrina disaster.

It's going to be a mess to clean it up - the weather isn't helping either. At least there are new techniques now that were not available when the Exxon ship ran aground. Still, it's going to have a huge, huge impact - both on the environment and the economy of areas affected.

I wonder what caused this accident? Maybe I'm just cynical, but the fact this thing blows up soon after the Feds announce plans to do some more off-shore drilling seems suspicious. Enviro-loonies plan a small accident to sour public opinion on new drilling, but got more then they bargained for?

Probably not, but it did cross my mind . . . OMG! Have I become one of those wacky conspiracy theory junkies? I gotta lay off the caffeine . . .

I'm no conspiracy theorist but I have wondered that also. They are likely celebrating that those 11 "evil" oil drillers were killed since they were "destroying" the earth whether they had anything to do with it or not. They may not have caused that but time will tell.

That's not the same rig is it Bill? Even though where did they find their operators? :(

No Darlene the rig that is now leaking is called Deepwater Horizion and the Katrina disaster rig is the Thunderhorse.

    Both rigs belong to BP.

Hmm, I want the Secret Service to release the location of Bush when this happened. :-D

Gonna be a huge mess. Feel bad for the victims and their families. Drilling is a dangerous job in land. Add in a bunch of helicopter rides, and the fact you are not on land... I would not want to do it.

Isn't that a bit prejudgemental? I mean, no one knows fully what caused the explosion. It could be negligence, but I highly doubt it was intentional. I mean, BP are losing money on this thing every day.

I just don't understand that as soon as something happens, and accident, we are all ready to consign said company to oblivion. Remember, there are families who work for that company. Do we want all of them out looking for work?

I would just like to point out (Not that I am defending anyone) that in each of these cases the rigs are either contracted to BP and run by other companies, or they are only part-owned by BP with no controlling interest.

I am not castigating anyone, but if i own a company that hires lets say cars, i make a contract with you when you come for a rental that it is safe for purpose and if it breaks down on your journey it is my responsibility to repair it.

This of course depends on the disclaimers (small print) in the contract so just maybe BP are justified in laying the blame at Transocean for unsafe practice.

The benchmark was the 1967 spill in Santa Barbara. Doom and gloom were predicted, only it took a few days to publish. Sometimes having instant news is enough to make one batty.

FIVE months later, the environment revived.

We can only hope the Lousy-anna (I lived there for 2 1/2 yrs) ecosystems can bounce back. :)

It will be about a week before the gas prices start hiking. :(

I do not appreciate the slur. I thought this was a family oriented site.

Now, if you want to bribe me or one of our politicians, that is OK. ;) Just make sure I get my cut. :-D

Not picking, but honestly, your assumptions were the most provocative to me from reading the screen. I would have said the same to anyone regardless of sex, of which, I didn't know yours, nor anyone else's.

Looks like it was just an accident pure and simple from news reports. Of Course, that doesn't stop politicians from grandstanding on capitol hill today with oil execs. Just waiting for Algore to have a cow.

@ motc7, it's obvious we are on different ends of the political spectrum even though if you or anyone were to make their views public I would not respond or ask how they came to that conclusion. I would leave it alone, especially with the Hot Topics being deleted (for that reason) and I expect the same courtesy.

I have erred before and will not do it again.

  28. motc7

    motc7 Vice Admiral (Starfleet)

The political spectrum and to what end you or I are on it is irrelevant. What I was addressing was your comment about my picking on your twice in two separate occasions based on your perception. Frankly, I do not know what you are talking about is all I as saying.

  29. darlene1029

    darlene1029 A Grand Lady- R.I.P. 06/06/2012

Rather then drudging it all up don't you think it best we both forget it all and start all over?
Politics and Religion was one/two of the reasons for the Hot Topics to be done away with, and if we continue down this path we could be done away with as well. ;)

Well turns out during the investigation committee fingers were pointing in a circle from all three involved.
They're probably all equally to blame.
With millions of dollars in fines and horrific accidents I don't understand why BP was allowed to do anything new being it had not corrected it's infractions.
That's letting a kid with all Fs going on to a higher grade. Not a good plan!!!

I hope someone comes up with a plan real quick to stop the oil and start cleaning up. Those people on the Gulf have had more then their share over the past few years. :(

Well I agree with motc I don't think it will be the end of BP at all or should it.

I think oil is such a finite necessary resource I personally don't believe private companies should be allowed to profit from it BUT if they do profit which is fine they MUST be held accountable when it goes wrong especially since they are making record profits.

They shouldn't be allowed to have it both ways when it suits them,a private company when profit is involved and a public necessity when there's a disaster.

No, there's a whole lot on American companies involved also.

    Transocean Drilling
Halliburton (who we're familiar with from Cheany and Iraq) :(
They explain their services as "the world's second largest oilfield services corporation with operations in more than 70 countries."
    And the owner being
    BP

so no :) I'm sure we are worse, have had some real winners running the country for some time. I don't mind pointing fingers No matter who it is LOL

Well, just to get this back on topic, it looks like the hurricane season could be bad as the ocean between Africa and the US is 2.5 degrees warmer than ususal and El Nino is not around anymore to knock the tops off of developing 'canes with its high level winds like last year. I really hope that the meteorologists are dead wrong this time around.:(
