Here is what I would recommend for you, Earl. They're all freeware, so don't worry about monies.

For ripping: Use DVDFAb Decrypter. If you've figured out how to get DVDShrink to write an ISO, you should be able to do it with this. Play about in the menus, especially under tools and options, etc.

For compressing: You can't top DVDShrink for these. You would click open image, find the file you want to shrink, and make sure that you've specified the size you want. It will automatically make it that size (ie 4.7 GB for a single layer disc)

For burning: Use DVD Decrypter. On the mode menu, select ISO --> Write. Then, press the folder button, and navigate to your COMPRESSED image. Then press the hard drive to DVD button. It will burn with the settings you've specifed.

This should almost assuredly work for you. I've done this many a time myself. (note: I've written this on the assumption that you're using a single layer burner, if not, you can skip the compression steps)

my main man mitty, thank you.ok let me get this right...like i said im a dummie, ummm so i kneed the dvdfabdecrypter for burning and ripping??and i should be burning in an iso?now this is the dvd burner i have on my computer......8xdvd(+/-)r/rw dl drive, but the disks im useing my wife picked up for me they are the maxell (color)dvd-r 4.7gb 8xmax 120 min.can you ferther go in to detail on the compressing thing???

DVDFab Decrypter is currently updated, and therefore, it should be able to open and rip every disc available (or will with the next update), where DVDShrink and DVDDecrypter are no longer updated, and may generate issues on newer discs. And yes, ISO writing/burning is probably the most reliable method.

Compression should be already set up for you. DVDShrink defaults to 4.7GB, which should fit on a single layer disc like the ones you have. If not, (forgive me as I'm going from memory here), there should be a drop down menu in the to right that has preset sizes for compression. It should be a breeze to set it up correctly.

As for Maxell Media  (<-- That's a thumbs up from me), its among the best I've used.

Let me Expand on this. You click Open Image, browse to the image you created with DVDFab, and open it. Select 4.7GB from the drop down menu, if its not already selected. Then, press the Backup! button, and it should spit out another image that's the appropriate size for burning.

ok now im a lil confusedhttp://forums.majorgeeks.com/images/smilies/confused.gif
:confused:ok so i kneed to use dvdfab dycrypter to rip my disks then use dvd shrink to size it right then use dvd decrypter to burn with, ummmm that sounds hard,to take the movie from the ripper to the sizer to the burner,so i can associate all 3 of these programs to gether???and that means i can get rid of the alcohol 120% and the burner xp thing too right?where do i get the dvdfab and the dvd decrypter??

one more thing where dose every one get the cool looking pics next to their name??

I'm not certain about DVDFab decrypter, but you can go into the options of DVDShrink and tell it to automatically burn with DVDDecrypter.

And these pics are called avatars. If you select the "User CP" link at the top of any MG page (when you're logged in) it will take you to your control panel. Then, click the "Edit Avatar" link. This lets you choose from MG's preset avatars (like mine), or load your own.

You don't necessarily need to get rid of Alcohol, or burner XP. Alcohol has a utility that will allow you to make an ISO file into a virtual DVDROM that acts like you have the file burnt on disc and inserted into the drive. It can be pretty nice.

The easiest way to make an exact copy is to use a program that burns in RAW mode.

The best two are CloneDVD and Alcohol 120%.

All you have to do is create an image, then burn it.

Both programs have very good help files if you get stuck.

Mate, I didn't reply as I believe you are doing it the hard way.

Use either of the two programs I suggested and you only need to click a couple of buttons!

Anyway, as far as copying XBox or any other games, it's not allowed here.

This link http://www.megaupload.com/?d=VKPLI4DF has a PDF with instructions on how to use DVD Fab Decrypter, DVD Shrink, and DVD Decrypter to copy a DVD Video disc. It was too big for an attachment here.

I mean that discussing copying games is not allowed here.

Anyway, as far as the DVD is concerned, if you are making an exact copy, create an image, then simply burn that image.

You can burn on the fly (directly from one DVD to another), but an image is the safer and better option.

Also, if the DVD is copy protected then I can't discuss that either sorry.

If you need further information on how to create an image, read the help files.

However it's all wizard driven and very simple.

Xbox and PS2 game discs are easy to copy. They use hardware protection and require extensive, complicated and usually expensive modifications to the console itself and in the end it's just easier and cheaper to buy the games.

As far as DVD movies, if you own it you're in the clear. If you don't, it's piracy. MG has several DVD movie copying apps.

Heh, this is something else I've attempted, and I have to say, its fairly difficult.

I don't know if I agree here. Yes, the Xbox motherboard does require that you attach a modified BIOS to bypass their protections (which is a feat in itself - get a solderless modchip or a professional to install it), but ripping and burning games requires a specialized app, and that you rip them in xboxs image format.

Although, if you are successful (and don't get caught) then it could easily be worth it. However, chances are it will be fudged along the way, which means you could ruin the xbox, not to mention the legal ramifications. You don't want the man coming down on your head. I really don't recommend it Earl. Its much tougher than backing up a DVD, and you won't have a major geek to walk you through it. ;)
