Ok, I just need a good, reliable system...

    Hey all,

Well, income tax money is coming back soon, and I'd like to put together a computer with some of the cash I'll be getting.

I'm not a gamer, so I don't need high-end video graphics. I don't do music or video stuff either except listen and watch lectures and a some broadcasted programs on the internet. Namely, the system is for internet, Excel, Access, running games here and there (not the real high-end demanding stuff), and over-all use, mostly researching and running a business.

I want a system that is strong and reliable but not top of the line (I simply don't need top of the line). Speed is important, however, both with the CPU and the drives. I'd like a decent amount of ram so I can multi-task without getting slowed up.

Oh, and I definitely want to back up my info onto a CD (or DVD, if that's a better way to go) on a frequent basis. A flat-screen monitor would be nice IF...if it is solid, reliable, and crisp (who needs eye strain, right!). Otherwise a regular monitor will do.

So, what do you all suggest for a case, MOBO, CPU, amount of ram, drives and a monitor

(Ah, yes. Price!). Well, I'm not interested in spending more than $750.00 at the absolute most.

    Thanks very much,

Just happend to read this review today http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2626 Actually they dont really like the motherboard, performs worse than other models with same chipset but anyway - decent onboard video which should be enough for you. Can allways upgrade later. Asus will probably make some bios updates for finetuning.

This Nvidia chipset also comes using Intel socket so you are not forced to AMD.

Well, 717$ with 80gb hd but no shipping.

    Motherboard:

CD/DVD, chose it when you select motherboard and save 5$:

You will need Windows 2000 or XP for this. Possibly also a new Power Supply. 40$ for a Fortron 400W designed for these new motherboards is cheap http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817104953 Be careful not to buy just any power supply, there are still older models around. Has to do with how they are rated and deliver power. This wont mind a new video card or other extra part you might add later.

Motherboard is tiny, Micro ATX format so be sure it fits your case.

If you are going to buy an LCD monitor, make sure you check the dead pixel warranty.

Starkman. I see your in Minnesota. If your in the Mpls area there is a stor that builds good systems. Their on University Ave. near the DinkyTown Campus. Their web site is http://www.nanosys1.com . Their not the absolute best price on the internet but if your in the metro their near by for any possible warrantee purposes. I have sold quite a number of their computers to customers and have only had 1 problem which turned out to be a faulty stick of memory.

    Hey, thanks, shnerdly.
I'm a good two hours away from the Twin Cities, but I'll certainly check into it. I'd really like to build my own system this time, you know. I want to have the satisfaction of having put what I want together! That makes warranties a bit tougher to deal with, I suppose, but what the hek!

Anway, thanks for the tip. I'll check into it.

Yes, A-DATA is a brand and often cheap. But pretty good. Reason I chose it was because Newegg list it when you click "Compatible products" under entry of Asus motherboard. I would like to check Asus QVL download but server is down. More memory than what Newegg and Asus approve of will work but just want to be sure. Memory can be fully or somewhat incompatible, might as well get something you know will work for sure. If you mean brand as opposed to generic ram with perhaps funny names you are right, do get a real known brand. Easier to research before buying.
