OK I originally posted this thread http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=83782
in the Maleware forums. Chaslang helped me out allot and he and I seemed to work through the problem. What I found is that my PC freezing up MAY be a hardware issue.

A friend of mine gave me a 512MB memory chip for my PC. He said he got it from his old PC and that I could use it if it worked. I installed it in my pc and 2 other programs (same day). The next day I started to have freezing problems.

Chaslang and I started to figure out I only have minor faults in my PC, nothing that could cause it to freeze. Now, can some one help me ID this mysterious Memory chip? I would like to see if this older piece of hardware could be causing my PC to freeze since it is not new enough for my new Vaio. I am new to hardware and software issues, so newb guidance is appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your help.

*I removed the memory stick, so I can refer to any product labeling or codes.

Were you running it by itself, or in conjunction with your original memory stick?

If you were running it along with your original stick, there might be an incompatibility between them...sometimes RAM likes to be in matching pairs (same make & model).

If you were running it alone, then there very well could be a fault with it...or your motherboard just may not like it. Most motherboard manufacturers have lists of "approved" RAM & other components...if you use something else your mileage may vary.

Is your computer running fine with your original RAM back in, and the suspect stick now out?

If there are no identifiable manufacturer's name/markings on the RAM itself, you'll need to re-install it & use a program such as Everest to identify it.

Get everest to identify it and use memtest to see if it is working properly, you can get both of those here at majorgeeks.

I originally had 512mb or ram in. Since then I have purchased brand new 512mb. All has ran fine up to the point of installing this ram. It is running better. Things still lock up for a short time. Physically engraved/printed onto each chip of the ram is this:

    VT 5B 0243
    VT3225804T-75
    VT32MB

There are some stickers on the ram that say this:
    DDR 512MB
    PC2100

That is pretty much all that is on the ram chip

So does the info I gave give no info to you?

How much ram is installed is it an original 512mb and this new ram 512mb gives you a total of 1gb?

if you remove your older ram and only have this new chip in do you still get the same freezes and lockups?

what are the specs of both ram chips, Everest as mentioned above can tell you this, I know you haev posted the specs of the newer ram above but is the original ram you have the same spec?

actually maybe quite a handy thing to post an Everest Report and attach it as you do a HJT log ( click Report > Next > Custom and untick everything apart from Computer and click Next and save as a txt file )

with the newer ram installed run this app to test its integrity and if its got any faulting chips http://www.majorgeeks.com/Memtest86_d1247.html

I have 1.50gb right now without the old ram in.

I will reinstall the ram and run the everest program and post. Thanks!

also run the memory test app as well, it may take some time is is one task to run overnight or when you are doing something else apart from being on the PC.

Ok I have the memory added and everest installed, what report do you need to see?

the memory test app, is that in evererst? if yes, where?

also the heat sensor said the temp in my pcs is 52c/127f. Is this a bad temp?

Depends on the processor. Under a full load, it's not too bad. But at idle that's pretty hot. To make sure you're getting a reliable reading check the temp given in the BIOS as Everest sometimes gives inflated temps (as I've learned over the last few days)

I got the temp from the everst program. I have been running all sorts of malware programs and such.

how do I check in the BIOS Pickle. I am not sure, I have never done that. Thanks dude

Restart your computer and hit the hotkey to get into setup (usually f1 or del).

Dig around in setup until you find it usually under "pc health status" or something like that.

Ok Halo, I reinstalled the Old ram and ran the memory test in everest. It is in the dimm2 slot of th report. Please let me know what you find and or think.

I tried that memtest program you linked but couldn't figure out how to run it.

Addiontally, when I reinstalled the memory this message poped up.

    Serial Presence Detect (SPD)
device data missing or inconclusive. Properly programmed SPD device date is required
for reliable operation. DDR 333mhz memory assumed at lowest settings.

    Press any key to continue.

I have a major feeling that using 3 different speeds of memory ( pc3200 2700 and 2100 ) is causing you your freezes or lockups.... just to test that theory you could do a test, in which only the one type or speed of memory was used at a time.

2 different speeds maybe ok but three I really dont know, maybe some others here may have input on this.

that message you got was normal as memory will only run at the slowest speed installed which is why its advisable to always install memory at the same speeds so PC3200 is your fastest so all modules should be at that speed.

I see what you are saying Halo. How would I run seperate test on each memory slot? Can I use everest doing that?

I really didnt even think about the different speeds I had. So really the 3200 is running as fast as the 2100 can run? In that case I am really hosing myself on speed, correcd?

no real software tests per se but just spend a few hours using your PC with the separate memory installed, if all works ok no freezes then fine, then maybe use variations of the memory but closest two are the PC 3200 and 2700 even in these two you have a speed discrepency... as the 3200 will be running at 2700 speeds... so your not getting the max out of your system.

one quick test on speed you can use as you have Everest installed is have only the PC3200 installed then use the Benchmark feature at the bottom to test read and write speeds ( write them down ) then install the other memory and test speeds, then install the PC 3200 and 2700 and test the speed again.. note the difference.

but I feel strongly as the 3 differnet types are why you are having freezes.

I agree with the speed varients; as no freezing accured prior to the 2100 install. The 2100 is a few years old and was given to me from a friend and was of no cost to me. With your clarification I can conclude that it is the 2100 that has caused this.

Thanks Halo! You can delete this thread now as I feel like it is answered. I have another question to post as well. haha
