Like many others, I also have this problem: my Sound and Audio Device Properties tells me that I have "no audio device", and won't let me adjust the volume. This happened suddenly today, and I can't figure out why.

I've installed the Everest softwar, and under Multimedia and "PCI, PnP Audio" it says the following:
    Intel 82801FBM ICH6-M - AC'97 Audio Controller [B-1]

Could this be a problem with my drivers? Might there be something I can download from Acer (my manufacturer)? It's an Acer Aspire 3620.

Thanks so much for any replies!

Yes, if this is what is showing up as your audio, it usually means the driver has corrupted or has been deleted.
You can check for bad drivers this way:
    Device Manager
For XP: Go to Start>Control Panel> System. On the Hardware tab, click Device Manager, then click the plus sign in front of Sound, Video, Game Controllers.
For Vista: Go to Start>Control Panel>Device Manager
In Device Manager, if there is a ? in front of your audio device, that means no audio driver is installed.
A ! means driver installation attempted but with problems.

Check this before installing your driver:
    Windows Audio Service
    Go to Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services
Scroll down the list of services until you find the Windows Audio service.
Right click on it and choose Properties.
Make sure it is set to Automatic and Start is checked.

It is also a good idea to install your motherboard chipset drivers before installing the audio driver.
If you need more help, post back.

thanks so much for both replies.

musksnipe: I've checked the "start" and "automatic" bit, and that's as it should be. In device manager, there are no question marks or exclamation marks. There are Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio Drivers, Legacy Video Capture Devices, Media Control Devices, and Video Codecs. That's it, and none of these have questions marks by them.

    Full computer name: ACER-684C9A655D

joelsz: Thanks for the tip. I can't figure out which of the downloads for XP under "drivers and utilities" I should choose. These are all names I haven't heard before: "elock", "empf" etc. Tips?

As for the motherboard, I've downloaded the Bios Version 1.06 from Acer's website. I need to be really sure I'm installing the right one, though, my system tells me. REALLY sure. I have no clue. rolleyes Would I be doing the right thing by saying yes, and then installing one of the new drivers after?

Thanks again. You guys are really terrific. And I'll keep soldiering on :major

Any replies as to whether I should install the BIOS motherboard? Or any replies from joelsz or musksnipe about the questions in my last post?

Again, thanks so much for your replies.;)

I agree stay from the BIOS unless evertything else goes wrong. Just as a suggestion you should create a restore point just before you are about to install the drivers just in case things go pear shape so you can get back to your current point. To create a restore point for XP, goto Start>>>>Help and Support>>>>>Pick a Task>>>>System Retore>>>>and tick Create a restore point.

Make sure you get the appropiate Drivers for your OS! If this doesn't work you may want to DL "Drive Cleaner Professional" and uninstall your old Audio drivers through "Add/Remove Programs", reboot into Safe Mode and then open Drive Cleaner Pro to remove your old drivers (and their registry entries), reboot once more and install the latest Audio Drivers (for ease save them onto desktop in a folder). When Windows/Vista states "New hardware found" just cancel out and manually install the right driver, reboot and it should all be working.
