OK So I have...

my domain name, my basic site ready to upload to my server which will be ready this weekend. So far so good!
Do I need to run a DNS server as well?
How do I make my domain look at my server for the website info?
Can I transfer out my domain name and become the administrator for it?

 

Just point the domain name to the IP address of your server. The way you do this is a little diffrent depending upon who you bought the domain name with. BUt your registrar should provide some sort of web based control panel for you to make the needed changes.

 

Yup, just a little confused because depending on where I look my ip addy is different.
I have a script sig running which shows the ip of the user looking at the sig but this is different to the ip show by what is my ip.
Obviously the ip also needs to point at the individual machine on the LAN too...?

 

Ah, well, you arn't really setup to be hosting a site if this is the case. The way you would do this is through port forwarding. For example you'd forward port 80 on your router to go to the server which is running the webpage.

So you can only use one computer to host a website on port 80. Of course you could hsot on other ports if you forward them. But then you'd have to get people to type in the other port numbers to connect.

So basicly you point your domain name to the IP of your router and then forward port 80 on the router to the computer. It's fairly simple, if you ever want to host on more then one computer you'll need to setup some kind of server to deal with it though.
