This is sorta server question but in my case its an IBM Intellistation Pro M used as a workstation. The memory that is in the unit is 2x1GB hynix 2RX8 PC2-4200E-444-12, that would be ECC, but I can find nowhere that tells me whether buffered / unbuffered. so I want to beef up this system [max capacity is 8GB] and I'm finding the 2GB modules are priced well versus the 1GB. but mainly I need to know whether buffered & unbuffered can cohabitate peacefully, since I dunno what the current ones are.

I think I'll stick with identical 1GB modules hoping to match the ones already in there.

    Hi

Try running the RAM scan at Crucial and see if it gives you any more info, but I would stick to same type of ram as what is already installed as in the main they don't like to mix, especially if the board doesn't have multiple controller channels, and even then its doubtful as ram types don't like to be mixed.

Stick ti sane type as already in it, search on that memory code you posted and it may give you some tech specs, try Everest http://majorgeeks.com/download4181.html out and its memory listing menu for info

i finally found the right manual etc [had to call ibm their search function is so lame on website] - the dimms in there now are unbuffered and that's what the manual calls for. thankfully. more common.
    we can close this one.
    thanks for your help
