I've used AVG FREE v7.5 for years... But the update support ends today as Grisoft want's to end the program's usage for everyone. I chose AVG because it uses little to no ram. & through the years I've never been infected with a major virus it couldn't handle.

The most IMPORTANT reason why I've used AVG has been the fact that the only pc I own is a 1.4GHz Pentium 3, with 512mb of ram. I know this sucks but this is all I can afford right now.

Can anyone suggest any FREE anitvirus application that I can run on this machine that's so old? I need my memory free of any application hoggers or it'll run slow. Or can someone at least tell me how to install the newest AVG which is 8.0 and set it up like the old v7.5? Because I hear that the new AVG v8.0 slows your system down... Or at least does so if you don't set it up properly during installation I believe.

PLEASE HELP TODAY'S MY LAST DAY FOR AVG V7.5!! MY SYSTEM WILL BE UNPROTECTED!!!

What is your OS? The three recommended AV software here http://www.majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=20 are only valid if OS is Win2K or over.

Check out AVG's FAQ website and see if you can install it as it supports only as of 2000 Professional SP4 + SRP1 http://free.avg.com/faq.num-1238#faq_1238 This link also guides in how to install as per your preferences.

If the above doesn't help you, perhaps someone else can.

Sorry I forgot to mention that I'm running windows xp. I'm checking those links out now but please people still post your opinions if you can.

Used to use AVG, but they've gotten way too bloated for my tastes. Tried Avira, but don't like the intrusive advertising (don't mind advertising, I mind advertising that takes over my screen). Still, for me Avira is the antivirus of choice for XP at the moment due to its very small memory footprint.

I would not say Avg v8 is bloated. It may use more resources, as it has real time anti spyware protection aswell . When installing, choose the custom option and uncheck Link Scanner/Safe search.

    You can get it from
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/AVG_Anti-Virus_Update_d4478.html

Avira's Antivir is an excellent choice as well.
    Get it from
    http://www.majorgeeks.com/Avira_AntiVir_Personal_-_Free_Antivirus_d955.html

As for the Avira nag screen get rid of it from here-

    Cheers..

Yah but who has proof that AVG uses less system resources and memory than Avira, and Avast? Does anyone know? I wish their were some sort of graph or detailed comparison using the most up to date versions of the three applications. I'd love to know that... If I did this decision would be a lot easier for me. :p

Ok well what really cheeses me off is how GRISOFT seems to have tricked me again. I was actually able to DOWNLOAD an update this morning... Now if program support and updates are supposed to end when they say it is why don't they?

They've said the support/updates would end on specific dates that came and went over 4 different times in the past year. I'm starting to think that they're doing this again. It might possibly be a scare tactic to have people uninstall v7.5 and install v8.5. I may be taking this a stretch too far when I say this but maybe they have no control in stopping v7.5 from updating and won't admit it??? Or for all I know the new updates I'm receiving [which according to them shouldn't even be updating] could be useless or damaging my system... Lol. In any case what do you guys think?

I'm trying to hold onto this anti virus because of it's low system resource and memory use. My P3 can't handle any cpu/ram hogs.

Superstar, I've at one time run Win Xp Pro with Norton 2005-06!! On 256Mb ram with no problems!!
I would definately want a supported AV.
    Have you used -

This could save some ram.. Cheers..

I think the P3 is a red herring.

I am typing this on a 700Mhz P3 with Windows 2000 and Avast, and apart from the longish boot time I would back it's speed against many 3Ghz XP and Vista pcs that I service every day.

With Avast (and AVG) you can turn many functions on or off so the speed will depend upon which module you have running. The AVG toolbar certainly slows Internet Explorer down a deal (as do most toolbars).

I do place high priority on the issue of reliability and here Avast scores hands down.

Good luck with your search for a replacement.

If OP's rig is a 1.4Ghz it will be a p4. Should be good to go :)

About step 4... Is the email scanner used to scan online email while your surfing such email inboxes at sites like yahoo, hotmail, gmail, etc? Or is it an email scanner for programs like OUTLOOK? [Which I don't use or really even know what Outlook even does. All I know is it has something to do with messages and emails.]

It's actually a rare Pentium 3 processor which is called the TUALATIN processor in the family tree of the P3 cpus. It was never released on a massive scale and only a few exsist out there in the world. It was used as the basis for developing the P4 so they actually do look similar in shape/design [ie: heatspreader, etc]. It can supposedly be overclocked to 2ghz but I don't know how to do that since I know nothing about overclocking.

I'm running AVG 8 on an old (purchased in 2001) HP notebook that runs at 1GHz. Don't laugh; it was a speed demon in it's day! The computer originally came with ME _ again I hear the snickers but on that computer ME ran nearly without a problem for several years. I eventually updated it to windows 2000.
I select a custom install, as I do on most software. I unchecked the safe site search, anything below that and the email scanner simply because I never download email to that computer. AVG 8 is two products in one. It is an av and an antimalware that's why it is much larger and takes longer to scan. I'd rather put up with longer scanning times and be safer. AVG gets better test results then some other programs. I do not feel a slow down.

There is one problem with AVG8 and the fact that my hd is formatted FAT32 (because of originally having ME on). I can't get updates until I go in and delete the temporary files. As far as I'm aware, this isn't a problem on XP formatted FAT32 just 2K.

Try it and if it doesn't work for you then try one of the others mentioned.

LOL REMEMBER WHEN I SAID THAT I WAS GETTING POP UP ADS FROM AVG EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE FOR THE PAST WEEK SAYING THE PROGRAM SUPPORT WOULD END MARCH 18TH?

& How I still was able to update the program the very next day on the 19th. Well get this...

I got another pop up ad today and this time it say's AVG support and updates for v7.5 end APRIL 12TH. LOL seriously are you kidding me? These people are jokers I'm tired of their lies. The ad has three buttons... Update now to v8.5, download later, and obviously the red "X" close button. This is getting out of hand. I know it's free and blah blah blah. But why mislead people? This is a definite tactic to get everyone to download v8.5. I'm starting to think that ya maybe they can't block updates for v7.5 users, for some odd reason and they know it. I'm still using it and don't care if it's old. It protects me and my system hasn't had a virus or instability problems in ages. Just giving you guys the heads up. This would now be the 5th time they have extended their FAKE day of termination. I'll even show you guys the screenshot I took with my digital cam later on if you don't believe me. What a joke...

    Just my two cents:

I have a six year old Sony Viao with a P4 2.0G, so it is somewhat similar to yours. This is what I have on mine:

I use Spyware Terminator with the Real-Time Shield enabled, SpyBot mainly for the immunization feature (It's great for your host file protection and can replace Spyware Blaster), MalwareBytes for weekly scanning, and I use Avast! for anti-virus needs. I also disable activeX in IE, install IE7Pro, and use mainly Firefox with AdBlock Plus and Download Statusbar (with it, I can easily have everything I download scanned by Avast!). Even in XP, Windows Firewall is more than enough with a hardwire router between your computer and the modem.

I've had this setup exclusively for the past two years and can claim I haven't had any major virus or spyware attacks ever.

    Hope that helps!
