OK windows has me baffled

So Ive been having this prob with Excel with it opening really slowly, and I noticed its windows explorer also, the right click menu is taking a while etc.

Well after hours of trying to figure this out, I desperately pulled the network plug......what do you know......everything starts working right.

Well im lost as to why this would be a problem. Its on a LAN that connects to the net through a T-1.

I ran winsock fix program that resets some settings but it didnt help. If anyone has any ideas or has experienced this problem I would appreciate some incite as to how to fix it.

do you have norton on that box?

 

uninstalled it completely didnt change anything.

 

ive also ended all processes that I could in the task manager

 

have you run disk cleanup and defraged? Also you mention when you plug in the network it slows down more and when you unplug it everything runs normal. I would run a check for a virus or spyware or malware that may be trying to communicate with a server somewhere eating up processor time and bandwidth.

 

ive done the spyware, I just uninstalled the virus scanner and ive ended all process's in task manager.

 

what version of windows are you running?

 

XP, I just realized SP2 is on here, did same thing with SP1

yeah I thought that was it at first, but its windows explorer. Whenever I right click on something or pull up properties it sits there for a good 60 secs.

Man I wish I could figure this one out.

Firewall is off. Authentication is off. I uninstalled something called deterministic network enhancer whatever it is.

it's a free 30 day trial. run the boot time defrag. It's under the change your settings menu. after that runs then defrag in windows and that should help a bit. Just a thought.
