Now that I have my computer fixed, thanks Majorattitude for the battery suggestion! I can work on my brother-in-law's computer again.

Here's a brief review. Basically his computer kept restarting over and over again. it would do it either when it was completely up and running or when it was just turned on, it really didn't matter. The motherboard is new.

It was suggested that the power supply was the culprit. Bought a new power supply and now I don't have any video what so ever. It doesn't matter if it's the AGP card or onboard video. There is nothing coming through to the monitor. The monitor that I am using is my own that I know does work. I also put his AGP card in my computer and it too works. The other thing is that the brand power supply is overheating. I turned it on and it got damn near to hot to touch. My power supply is the same as his, but mine has 100 more watts then his does. I quickly shut it down and haven't turned it back on yet. i don't want to burn out the brand new power supply!

Any other ideas? I don't know where else to look at this point. I do have one idea and it involves a 12 gauge shotgun and setting the computer up as a target!

I will try! I can't get anything from it video wise and I don't remember everything you will need off hand. I may however have a PCPitstop report with the parts listed somewhere.

Okay, this is what I have for you:

    Intel Pentium 4 3.4ghz, 200MHz External clock speed, SiS-661
    1024mbs of PC3200 DDR Ram
    NVIDIA GeForce FX 5900XT 128mbs
    ViewSonic 50103 Monitor
    Windows XP Home SP2

I don't remember what the Soundcard is. Also, it's 2 sticks of Ram, only two dimms though.

I'm not really sure what else your wanting, if you can elaborate, that would be great.

Well the new PSU doesn't say anything. If it's of low quality and low watt (you said it's 100w less than yours) it is normal that it overheats. Can you post the PSU brand and Watts?

    It's a Chiefmax 550 watts. This one specifically :

Mine is a Chiefmax 650 watts.

I went with this brand because of cost and reviews were good.

I would suggest that you go for a barebones set up ie mobo, cpu, ram & vga. Connect a monitor and see if it boots/posts (and gives you the single beep).

At this stage you really need to make sure that the components are working in order to find a solution.

I know it's a pain, believe me I hate it when someone gives me the same advise but look you bought a new psu which did not solve your issue and now you have VGA/monitor problems.......

I am not sure from what you are saying whether your mobo has onboard graphics but if it does, make sure that it is disabled in the bios and make sure that you clear the cmos also.

    Good Luck

The PSU is fine. Now I am a little out of ideas... Follow risk_reversal's advice. It could be a multimedia device conflict (I just made up this term but you understand what I mean  ) Turn on the pc with as less components as possible (the onboard GPU and soundcard, if you have two modules of 512 Ram remove one of them too). If the problems stop, then something is faulty. Start replacing the parts, one at a time and when the problem appears again you have found the bad one.
If nothing changes with the above, then maybe it is a mo/bo problem. Try a BIOS update.
