Ok here is the deal. I'v got an old compaq. I put in 128mb ram, a 40gb hdd and im trying to install windows 2k. it formats and dose that setup right after...when it restarts IT WANTS TO SETUP AGAIN!! and if i take out the 2k disk it says Disk Boot Failure, Incert System Disk and Press Enter. GRR... what is going on?!?! anyone know?

 

Those old Compaq's can be a pain, and I've worked on a few. You might try ejecting the Win2000 cd and removing it, when the " computer will reboot in 15 seconds" screen pops up after setup has finished installing all the files. This should force the computer to look for a bootable device, which should be your C: drive, and if this works, wait until Windows asks for the cd before reinserting it.
Should the above not work, and Win2000 has finished its setup, with the cd still removed, reboot and go into your bios and change your boot order to look for C or hard drive first. Hope this helps!

Hmm, if it was a memory problem I don't think you would even make it to restart with your install.

I have to agree with Novice, it sounds like the win2k install prog finds your hard drive, but the bios doesnt find it when you reboot.

Even if the cd drive is selected as first boot device in the bios, as long as you dont touch the keyboard, it should then go to hdd-0 and boot your hard drive.
Only things I can think of, Jumper setting on hard drive is incorrect, or you may have the wrong hard drive selected in bios as boot device,
if the hard drive is on the #1 ide cable, and plugged into the end plugin (master) with the hard drive jumper/s set to either master or cable select, then you should be able to enter bios and set hdd-0 as first boot device and finish your install.

Check your jumpers and bios settings and let us know what you find, you may have overlooked something.
