I believe I have a corrupted profile. The error I received when I try to log on with the alleged profile is the following:

Windows is unable to load the profile specified and has loaded with the default profile for the system.

DETAIL - Cannot find the file specified

I have tried a number of fixes on the internet, including creating a new profile, and moving the information over as per this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151/en-us

but no luck. I would really appreciate some help if anyone has any ideas. Thank you.

Is your Operating system XP SP?

You can try this, only difference is method to copy but worth a shot. Was the new account you
    created a Computer Administrator?

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555473/en-us

Only other I can think of is back-up documents and favorites and delete the user. Make sure you create another Administrator acct. first.

Thank you for the quick reply. Yea, its WinXP SP2 Prof. I tried your solution but it didn't solve the problem. It gives me that same message even for newly created accounts.

The only profile I can ever load is the default, and the message appears until it has changed all the accounts into the default profile. Many changes I try do not remain, even for the desktop theme. I find this very mysterious. My guess is my registry is damaged, but I do not know how to go about searching for the problem, and I have already tried loading a backup with no luck. I appreciate all your helpful suggestions! Thanks

OK, I think I'm grasping your problem now, look at this post here:

Am I off target or is above your problem? They have a workaround if I am understanding you correctly. If that does not help we need a MajorGeek to explain the issue, I'm over my head and don't want to make matters worse for you.

I'm sorry Cat that I was so ambiguous in the description of my problem. However, it is a problem that I have never come across before and it doesn't seem to have a specific source.

I am the only user on my current laptop, Toshiba Satellite A65 (it sux i kno) so user permissions is definitely not something I want to be messing with. I would like to have an administrator account, as I always make constant changes and installations in day to day usage. However recently when this problem started, and only the default profile would load up, it appears to give me admin rights, but none of my changes that I attempt to make remain (even immediately they revert back; or rather, i cant make changes ).

For example, when I try to change to show hidden files or extensions in windows explorer, after clicking apply, the change seems made, but there is no change in windows explorer, and sure enough when I bring the folder options dialog box up again, the choices have reverted back to "default".

It is extremely frustrating not being able to change anything, and I am beginning to think that the only way to fix this problem is a reformat.

Sorry Everyone for the long message, but I hope at least what is happening is explained better.

Sounds like a problem in user permissions (limited account), the Admin Acct was disabled or some type of security software installed.

Do you remember installing software prior to this issue, creating a new user account, had another issue, have you looked at running processes for anything that looks unusual? Something changed but I'm not sure what proceeded the change.

Press Ctrl-Alt-Delete twice from the welcome screen, how many accounts do you have, does another one come up as Administrator? XP Pro is a little different from Home (my OS) but should show all accounts.

Sounds like a home pc but want to make sure, was this pc set-up by an IT Dept. or another person?

Don't worry about long posts - nobody cares as long as pertinent to issue in Tech Forums. Sorry if I'm repeating what you already tried.

That sounds like it might be the case. I don't have any security software installed that i know of, and the only account I have ever had is the admin (which windows creates) and my own (which is given admin rights). I created a new account in attempt to solve this problem, and it is also a computer administrator.

The only thing I noticed when my computer started to act different, was that my firewall (Kerio, Free Version) started alerting me about a process that I have never got before: verclsid.exe. I initially thought that I had somehow received spyware, but I searched the internet and read that this is a required operating system process and nothing showed up on my scans (Spybot, Ad-aware), So I ignored it. Should I not have?

Well when you say IT department, I don't know what you mean, but since its a Toshiba laptop it was build by Toshiba 4 years ago, refurbished by them about 2 years ago. Sorry for my lack of knowledge, but I hope it helps.

Thank you so much Cat_w_9_lives for all your posts, I hope you can help me find the problem!

The problem you suggested now seems even more plausible. I received the error that I cannot write or create registry entries "Access Denied". This would explain why everything else is not changing (since I cannot change the registry).

How this problem got started I have no idea, but I think you figured out the source. I am also clueless on steps to correct the problem, assuming that we have indeed found it. I am surprised that my computer is even still working with the registry in the poor shape that it is in. I am sure some blue screens are coming to kill me without mercy.

"Configure your firewall to let the Verclsid.exe program run
Follow the steps for your firewall program to let the Versclid.exe program run, or click to allow the Versclid.exe program to stop running until you click through Kerio Personal Firewall's notification dialog box. You can configure Kerio Personal Firewall so that the Versclid.exe program runs without any prompts." (sorry not familiar with your firewall)

There was an issue with your firewall and a Windows update, but a year ago. Did you reinstall your XP recently? Only reason I can think of that the problem would crop up now, is you were reinstalling. Try looking at your firewall settings.

IT Dept. = Information Technology Dept. what I was asking is if someone else has access to the PC or if someone else updated or configured it.

I have recently reinstalled XP to fix the previous problem I had with the profile not loading. It did fix the problem, but the registry problem that I mentioned in my previous post cropped up.

I wouldn't be surprised if my firewall is the problem since it has had problems with several programs, but like you said, for it to crop up now is unlikely. But after I take the steps you suggested what do I look for? Problems? Unusual operation? Well I'll give it a try. (I am not even sure verclsid.exe is even trying to run anymore, because I thought that was an update from about a year ago). However, from what I read from the article my problem (unwritable registry) doesn't seem to fit any of the symptoms. But does the article say that just allowing the process should fix the problem? Somehow I doubt that.

Thanks for all your help, and please let me know what I should be looking for.

Re: Old Account Profile will not load

    So this is solved now?

I don't know what you're trying to change in the Registry or why. I would leave the Registry alone, that might be how you ended up with a corrupt profile ;)

Yes. I can load my profile with all my desktop icons and the like. That part of the problem seems to be fixed.

However, the new problem is that my computer does not run programs correctly. It cannot access the registry at all for some reason, so whenever I try to run a program, it usually doesn't work. Also I can not make any changes to the desktop or put any backgrounds on my desktop. I also cannot make any system changes. So it appears I have no admin rights and no access to even the items already present in the registry. But even without admin rights I should still be able to change my desktop background, but it gives error: "Applying Visual Styles Error: the visual styles could not be applied". I am sorry if this sounds sort of vague, but I have no other way of explaining it besides what I have seen so far. When some programs run, they give an error that says something about cannot find the registry data (or access it).

And I agree with you, there is no need to fool around with the registry if you don't know what your doing (like me). I received that registry error message when trying to install a program (I was not using regedit.exe). I am unsure how this problem started since I have only used my computer the same as always, except for the verclsid.exe thing above. I tried allowing all access in the firewall to the program and has seemed to change really nothing at all.

This is a new problem where I am locked out of my registry, and a majority of my programs will not run. Should I start a new thread topic, since this topic's title no longer seems to fit?

If you're still having problems, yes I would start a new post, this one is off track now - my fault I didn't ask the right questions.

Post your PC specs. in new thread i.e.
    Toshiba Satellite A65
    XP Pro SP2
    ....RAM

    Also post:
    Firewall and version
Any Antivirus, malware software or other type security software installed
Example of What programs are not running and errors
Mention that you did a reinstall prior to this problem starting

Post a screenshot of the errors, How to:
    http://forums.majorgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=26019

Did you download some kind of theme, screensaver, game, have you checked your pc for malware? Your issue could be a conflict, restriction, group policy, rogue software/malware ...

Also on a side note; I find it's easier for people to help me in the forum if I stop and don't keep trying to fix it myself. In a forum people can't see what you did or are doing, so rely on the poster to inform them. Good Luck
