Old computer with 2 drives - C died - need advice (Win2k)

Hi all,

I was about to post a question about installing a 2nd opperating system on a 2nd drive because the 1st (C drive) was clicking and slow. BUT, with only a few hours of data left to copy from it, it went blue screen and gave me this wonderful message:

Windows 2000 could not start because of a computer disk hadware comfiguration problem.
Could not read from the selected boot disk. Check boot path and disk hardware.
Please check the windows 2000 documentation about hardware disk configuration and your hardware reference manual for additional information.

It runs on Windows 2kpro.

SO, now I'd just like to get some files off of the D drive if I can't get back C. Can I use my win2k disk to install the opp system on D and ignore C AND still keep the data on D. I think there was about 3gigs of space left on D.

oh brother...

Can you recommend a better option?

I would recommend that you take the D: drive and install it into another computer and copy off the data or buy another hard drive, install W2K on it and leave the D: drive as slave.

 

So installing W2K on the drive will remove the existing data? I'll probably have to do what you recommend.

Question: If I decide to ditch the data on both drives, can I then reinstall W2K on the D drive?

If the drive works, you can. Just set the jumper on the back to the master position.
