Old Dell Ispiron 1150 Laptop - Reinstallation

I have an old Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop that my dad would like to use as a back up for his new laptop. It needs a complete installation, but when I put the disk in it comes back with No bootable devices. If I look at the Set Up Page the Primary Hard Disk Drive says 0 none found.

Can anyone tell me how I rectify this.

PS.....I have taken the hard disk drive out and put it back in again, as that was fix suggested on a different site, but it didn't work.

    Hi

What Windows version are you going to install and do you have this on CD/DVD?
If so then boot into the BIOS (key/s to press will show as soon as you boot the laptop, need cat like reflexes to generally press them first time) and change the boot order to CD/DVD as the first boot device (that is if the press any key to boot from CD/DVD does not show as soon as you boot the laptop).

Then pop the CD/DVD disk in the drive and save and exit (F10) the BIOS and the Windows install procedure should start, then follow the prompts.

Reason for the No Bootable Devices found could be that the HDD is not setup with Windows and its bootloader.

DavidGP, Thanks for your reply. I have the Windows XP disc.

Tried this but no good. When I get to the window which says hit Enter to install Windows XP, I then get

'Set up did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly conbnected to your computer, and thay any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3.'

Hi my friend , when computer is starting up you can push F12 to enter Dell diagnostic running the tests

maybe you have to change either the achi to ide from bios or you can find the sata drivers , you can look at this post

even at the bottom of the laptop there is a service tag

Nothing is working. Think I have to admit the laptop is dead as a Dodo.

At this stage in the game it's a safe bet the hard drive is toast, especially if it's the original that this eight year old laptop came with.

These laptops had socket 478 CPUs and were notorious for running hot. Not a healthy thing for PC components, especially hard drives.

If you can, I would hook up the drive to another PC with a tool such as an Apricorn DriveWire device to see if that old IDE drive even spins up, and to do any diagnostics.

If you don't have such a tool, you could use one of my favorite tools which is the Ultimate Boot CD. It has more tools than you can shake a stick at, including drive diagnositic software from pretty much all the major manufacturers. If UBCD can't find it, nothing will.

You will need a free program like ImgBurn to make the CD-ROM from the .iso image.

    GOOD LUCK! :major

falconattack, Yep, tried everything and kept getting the Primary Hard Drive not found message.

themekanic, Yes it is the original HD.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to try and help. I am giving up on the lappy now and will be sending it off to dell for them to recycle it.
