OLD Games, I mean Old

I want to play Jane's Fleet Command on a comp running winxp w sp2. I always thought that XP had a way to allow older games to run. What do I need to do to get it to install? When I load it and hit the install key it just sits there and laughs at my maniacally. Am I S.O.L.?

 

Start> All programs >Accessories >Program Compatiblity wizard.

 

Been there and it still does not load. I get no errors, just the fleet command window to install game. I hit Install and nothing happens. The Compatibility Wizard doesn't do a thing for me. Please help.

 

here's an interesting idea; i used to do this for old school dos games:

download/buy a virtual machine software (like ms virtualpc or vmware) and install an old version of windows like win98 and then play away!

 

Sometimes programs won't install to the correct folders in XP because it uses a different folder system, namely c:\windows\system32 folder instead of c:\windows\system folder they are programmed to install into and it throws them off.

Find the programs setup.exe file, right-click, then Properties, and select the most likely operating system and install it.

Then right-click the programs startup exe file, then compatibility tab and try the different combinations in there.

If that doesn't work, and you want to persevere, try the Application Compatibility Toolkit.

It's on the XP CD, but it's version 3, and you can download a later version 4 from the Micro$$oft site.

It's a fairly detailed set of tools, so it's up to you how much effort you are willing to put into this.

In some cases it's just easier using an old computer for these older games or even a dual-boot configuration.

Try using a program like DosBox

its what i use for all my old dos games, never used it with xp though.

 

DOSBox is very cool, though ironically you need a good CPU to run it at full speed.
