I have this little laptop that was the last on the shelf at Staples and they gave me a GREAT Price on it. It's very slow with an ATOM processor and an OS that I've never seen before: WIN 7 "STARTER".

It has been suggested to update to OS 10 or 11 which is always suggested. However, I do not think that the processor and memory can handle any form of 10 or 11. Does that mean " throw it out "? When HP and other large companies produce products that one some level may be a good idea but it has no room for updating then what is a consumer to do?

I will say that I put ubuntu on a fast jump drive and it seems to make a huge difference in the speed of the laptop. But going blind makes it difficult to read up on it so I am not sure what I can do with it/

If you need ALL of the particulars of the HP laptop ( I think I got it in 2009 ) if you can tell me how to find that place where I can copy and paste everything you may need to see to figure out what I can do to make it usefull beyond playing FREECELL. I would appreciate it.

I would first check for any updates. Although as Win 7 has been out of support for a long time you may not find anything recent.
I suspect though it may already be up to date.

As it’s slow now then I doubt upgrading to Win 10 would make it any faster. But feel free to try.

Win 7 Starter is put on computers that have limited RAM. I'll bet that it has 1 or 2 GB of RAM and not more.
If it has a ssd then I imagine the drive might be 32 GB. That means, if you could, a Win 10 install needs to be a clean install because there isn't room to do an upgrade.

Your best bet to make it useful is to install some flavor of linux.

I can attach a full sized monitor to my 7" eeepc purchased in 2008 with linux using the VGA port. I suggest you do the same so you can see better.
(My "little guy only has a 4GB ssd so I'm not even able to install a newer version of linux. I could still use it to watch movies with an sd card inserted or read books with an sd card inserted but I now grab my 10" tablet to do that.)
