I have a Kaspersky Diagnostic scan.I know the problems:running XP/14 yr old computer.Cannot update past XP2,initial Java, initial Adobe,Firefox -system requirements are not there. This is the only problem I really have.It is javascript-I get "hung up".On a busy "day",it will hang and I have to reboot(after running KCleaner/few others). So,MUST I get another computer??I do not want one. Thank You,as usual, for your excellent services.
    PS..am killing autorun (again)
BTW: can I shred IE forever??

    Recommendations

Autorun from hard drives is allowed

Some malware replaces the autorun.inf file and copies itself to all available hard disks. This allows an attacker to gain control over the system and user data. When one of the disks is connected to the computer where autorun from the disk is enabled, the malware is executed.

Autorun from network drives is enabled

Some types of malware reproduce by copying network drives using the autorun.inf file. This allows an attacker to gain control over the system and user data.

    CD/DVD autorun is enabled

Some malware and adware is executed automatically from CDs or DVDs when these discs are inserted. This allows an attacker to gain control over the system and user data.

    Removable media autorun is enabled

Due to the proliferation of removable media, many malicious programs use autorun for distribution and infection. Thus, removable media refers not only to flash drives, but also mobile phones, cameras, card readers, and other devices that use memory cards that connect to a USB port.

Microsoft Internet Explorer: sending error reports is enabled

In addition to reporting error information, information about user computers can also be reported. Interception of this information can allow a successful attack on a user computer.

ANNIEPOTTS...what happens when you try to install SP3? I have a c2000 Pentium 4 PC running XP that doesn't have this issue, so I don't see how it could be a hardware thing. I think getting it installed could help with many of your issues.

One thing...are you attached to FF? I have been trying SlimJet on XP which is Chrome based. It supports extensions, and it will install on XP. You may require SP3 though not sure. This browser is using a small amount of RAM and is quite snappy for me so far. Also, FF has the dreaded plug-in container freezes. Just for the record this is not in the new FF Quantum from Moz but it requires W7 and up I think.

If you can get SP3 installed, the security problems can be dealt with fairly simply. You have light options out there that provide very good security. Panda is good but you could add Comodo FW or Comodo Internet Security with losing much performance-wise. Also, NoVirusThanks EXE Radar Pro is a very good program too. Super clean and light and allows you to whitelist command lines, something that can be learned fairly quickly. Installing the updates for Flash and so on aren't a big issue.

Otherwise, you might enjoy a more modern system, say something running Windows 7. It's less beastly than XP. I admit I enjoy mastering the blank slate that is XP honestly. Maybe you like it too...

yes, most require SP3 I cannot download from Microsoft.Says system requirements outdated and no longer supported etc etc.I do have Softonics(alternative site)download.AND,MG.Well,what problems that created:Everything went haywire on both downloads!Black screen, blue screen, shutdown!First, message:not recognized. Then,I decided to look at properties."o bytes" downloaded...and both sites took almost 4.3 minutes to "download".I did not want an earlier restore to get the .exe files out(Wise force delete could not get them out),so I used old 1.8 WhiteKnight HJT.That got rid of all of them.I am in safemode networking now.Otherwise, super hangs.I wrote down what you recommended. Will do shortly. What do I do for SP3 now?I must find an old disk I downloaded from Microsoft/SP3 many years ago.If you can, please suggest what to do about SP3..your download was corrupted.MG has been a savior, educator to me over many, many years. As a dummy at first, now an educated dummy after the years! Yes,I love using logic and figuring things out.I do not care how long it takes.LOL OCD? I want the damn XP to run for me!BUT,when I do dog rescue (as I have been past 2 days, quite heavy)I cannot accept the problems I am having.Rebooting 7 times is not acceptable to me.Nor hanging for many long minutes. Muchas Gracious! Barbara

You must increase the RAM amount.
125 MB available? No wonder it hangs and / or crashes...

    Glad it's running better :)

Have you tried running a chkdsk? That will find and repair corruption in the file system and mark bad sectors on the drive too. If you are still in safe mode, it's still easy to schedule a chkdsk. It's the same that or normal. In Windows Explorer right click on the C (OS) drive. Choose Properties->Tools->Check disk for Errors->put a check in both boxes and select Start->You will be asked if you would like to run the chkdsk on the next boot, select yes. Reboot and let the chkdsk run. If it finds anything run another one until it doesn't find anything else.

chkdsk does alot of work, even in XP. Actually, it's basically the same thing in all versions of Windows. It really does fix problems.

If you run it, you can find a log of the results of the chkdsk in Event Viewer. Open Event Viewer->Windows->Application->Go to the approximate time of the chkdsk and then look for a Wininit event. Double click on it and the full screen that. If it has the chkdsk report, take a screenshot and post it. That will tell alot about the file structure and also about the health of the drive...

On a struggling PC, always take the time to run a chkdsk. It's well worth the effort, even though they can go on for days. Normally, it will last only 40-60 minutes, even if corruption is found, but sometimes chkdsk finds an enormous web of problems. It will finish though, no matter how long it may seem to be taking...

I have run chkdsk many times over the past few years (Thanks to you past advice).I am going to do Friday (or Sat)EVERYTHING you wonderful Peeps said to do. Been dog tired with rescue.I have responded to over 200 calls for help. All over this country.SO SAD.

But: Bless ALL of YOU with excellent advice to keep running (and save those dogs.Your help, indirectly, has saved OVER 1,500 dogs (verified past 2 years)

John and I,and, our Gang wish ALL a Happy,Healthy and Blessed THANKSGIVING

this is cute-I know you all hate when people do this, but, haha,I am an old lady.YOU MUST OBEY senior rules;)

"I’ve given up social media for the New Year and am trying to make friends outside Facebook while
applying the same principles. Every day, I walk down the street and tell passersby what I’ve eaten, how I feel, what I did the night before, and what I will do tomorrow. Then I give them pictures of my family, my dog, and me gardening. I also listen to their conversations and tell them I love them. And it works. I already have three people following me—two
police officers and a psychiatrist."

apologies...was off few days.I usually run the above.I was 100% happy,UNTIL I hit Facebook and started back on my "animal abuse"pics/viewpoints etc and started sharing.WOW...everything went haywire-as it always does.I have 10K friends in eng/spanish and word travels.Once,FB said I have to open a commercial account? Never fails,FB slows me down, freezes, lock outs.I get by doing F8 with network.Better.I see also where I did have Mozilla firefox problems w/plug-in container exe.files.I killed them, killed them all (like John Wick).Going to see if I can get the Slim Jet w/WIN XP2. Looking forward to your exemplary advice,as always! MUCHO appreciated.

forgot to mention:whenever I am on FB,all the remote activations get activated!!Even the camera opened (I duct taped it)I tediously clean before I shutdown and do a beginning check upon rebooting a new day.So much for paranoid/OCD
This is what happens when one tries to stop animal abuse.AND,I post abusers pics, address etc.I am always legal...on the line ; )
