old newbe

hiya everyone. i now have an:

acer aspire 5810T
genuine intel(R) CPU U2 @ 1.30GHz 1.30 GHz
3.00 GB
32-bit

and of course i dont know how to use it.

when i was here last (what seems like eons ago!) i was advised to have

zone alarm PE
anti virus PE

spy blaster, spy catcher


clean up and ccleaner.


what would you suggest now?

i suppose the most urgent of these is the anti-virus and the firewall. the puter comes with a mcfee free trial, which i have not activated yet cos if i remember rightly nobody likes mcfee.....?

just as a side line...i downloaded wisdom screen hunter so i could paste the puter details 2u, but i cant find where they are stored or how you get them back. they are on a file but when i 'copy' and then come back to this page i cant get it to 'paste'. i remember wisdom as being really easy to use but things may have changed. it says it copys to 'clipboard' but i cant find clip board!!

ok.. so have spent most of the day downloading windows patches and updates, successfully i think. took a long time though...i thought wireless was supposed to be super fast....?

so next step is 2 remove macfee.

 

so - removed mcfee, downloaded AVG, comodo, and ccleaner. i will download spywareblaster coz you said so. PS. i don't understand anything about the firewalls etc...is there anything i need to know?

so the next thing would be the Internet access thing. i have internet explorer (8?). is there any reason to change that?

I've worked out what is 'wrong' with screen hunter. last time i used it, it downloaded to 'pictures' and i accessed them from there to attach to MG posts. it does go to pictures now. it haven't found were it does go.

thank-you so much for the help and advice. to those who do not remember me, do not let my title of major geek confuse anyone. the only major thing i am is majorly incompetent. i am a technology challenged individual, although i am quite smart and follow instructions carefully.

1) how do i get rid of the acer home page. i now have three...google, acer, and yahoo

2) what is the AVG identity protection. it is not activated. is it supposed to be?

3) what is the current best music site? (and are there any free ones?)
