I have a new computer that has Windows 7 as the OS. My printer is a HP LasetJet 4 that I connect by USB. I tried to set up this printer, but its option is not available in the device set-up in Windows 7 and I don't have a disk. When I visited the HP website to get the driver, it said that this device didn't need one. I tried plugging it into the USB and it loaded, but when I tried to print, it just hung. Running the troubleshooting option didn't fix it. Help!

When you go in to add a printer, from the driver select Windows Update.
We have a few old HP 4s around here and just upgraded to Win 7 also.
The 'open drivers' seem to work in our enviroment or PCL 6.
Hopefully your computer added the USB port for printing.
I'd still check to see that the USB is the port selected for the printer by checking the printer properities and ports tab.
I must say I have a few issues with Win 7 and printers, new or old.

Thanks for the tip on updating. It took a few minutes and then I did see the LaserJet 4 was added. Now my devices are showing this printer (see attached screenshot). I'm not sure how to check the USB port, though.

Nevermind, if the port were wrong the printer would not be there.
But you click the printer and select properties & click the port tab.

I have to connect my HP 5550, turn it on, turn it off, then on again and it then tries to take up the paper. If it doesn't catch the paper I turn off then on again and that usually does the trick.

That post is unrelated, next time start another thread.. but anyways.. I'd say get a refurb kit and replace the rollers, etc.

Why would I start another thread for offering advice?

Sorry that seemed some what unrelated. His issue was not finding a driver, I don't see how turning the printer off & on fixing that.
Sorry, but I'd replace the pickup rollers on that printer..lol

Sorry, I should have just said that when my printer hangs I need to turn it off then on again. Don't know if this clears the memory or what but it's usually what works. I once spent an hour sending things to the printer, watching it hang, searching online, trying to find updated drivers, disabling and reenabling, uninstalling, reinstalling, etc... all with the printer on thinking "it's on, it's connected, the computer is talking to it, why doesn't it work?". Turned it off and back on seems so simple, yet that's the one thing I didn't try.

I finally got a printout. What I had to do was plug in the USB first, THEN turn on the computer and let it find the connection, THEN turn on the printer. I was doing it backwards. It wasn't like that with Windows XP - just plugged in the USB when I needed a print and it would work. Thanks for the help!
