I've recently switched internet provider but I'm not happy with the router I've received (a Thomson TG580) and I want to go back to using my old router (a Netgear DG834G). How would I go about setting up my old router to work with new connection? I've never had to set up a router before so I'm pretty lost. Any help would be appreciated.

Really depends on the company and contract so you need to call them but the answer is most likely you can't. Typically the router provided by ISPs today is needed for everything. You can disable the wireless signal from their router and send the bandwidth to your Netgear is a simple way. I even have a router from Time Warner where I can't even change the router password. They are protecting the masses and making it harder for those of us with some knowledge.

Thanks for your answer. Thought I'd give my ISP a call even though they make a big deal out of the fact that they don't provide support for 3rd party routers and the guy I talked to was very accommodating. Basically he provided me with a router log-in and password and told me that if I used those when configuring my old router I shouldn't have a problem. Unfortunately I do as I keep getting the message "CHAP Authorization Failed", which from what I gather by going a bit of Googling probably means the log-in or pw isn't correct? Are there any other obvious settings that might cause this message?

I guess there's a risk I took down the details wrong though he read them back to me twice so I'm pretty sure they're right.

Both of the Routers you listed are ADSL2+ Modems with built in Routers. They should be interchangeable as long as your ISP allows you to use your own Modem as suggested my MA.

The changeover with DSL usually only requires knowing the username and password for the ISP login which is not something most people know. It has nothing at all to do with any of your personal login information. User and PW are both assigned by the ISP. If they allow you to own your own Modem, they will provide you will the correct username and password if you call them.

Okay, I've made some progress. After giving up yesterday, I decided to give it another go, re-setting my Netgear router and trying the login and pw provided by my ISP. And voila, test is a success and no more CHAP Authentication Failure. That's the good news. The bad news is I can't open any pages in my browser. Tried re-starting the router and my computer several times to no avail. Any suggestions?

Nevermind, fixed it by switching from LCC to VC multiplexing. Everything's running smoothly now :)
