We have an older IBM Apitva, 248 MB of ram, 1 G storage the desktop. We use it mainly as the computer that has the printer, and router for our internet. The two computers we use are our laptops, which are wireless to the desktop. It begin with Win98 but when we put the new hard drive in, went to Win2000 and then upgraded to XP Home. Now we have many issues. One is with the AVG protection program. It seems to have a conflict with this, saying there is another protection. (We can't find anything). Then on it's own it restarts, and we loose the ability to network with it from either of the laptops. Can't print or bring up the desktop. I have used CCleaner once and removed some programs not needed on it, this helped make it faster loading up, but the other issues still exsist. Any ideas? :confused also known as Joan

Did some time on this computer today. The error list that came up said that the Service Pack 3 could not download. Since I had the machine on automatic updates there were lots of tries. Then I went to Windows update page, looked for all the files they have you look for, step by step did everything they said and started the download. The error message for this failer said:

    16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
    c:\pcdr\DMIBIOS. EXE
    C:\programfiles\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswMonvd.dll
an installable Virtual Device Driver failed dll initialization.

I did have Avast several years ago, uninstalled it, and downloaded AVG (twice now).

Anything I can do for this?

C:\pcdr is PCDoctor which is installed with your IBM
It's a diagnostic program so I'm not sure if it is trying to tell you that you need a BIOS update before XP SP3 will install.
The computer started out with win 98 and with hardware that old, at some point I'd think it would refuse to go any further in updating.
You also are very low on RAM for XP.
I suspect you have a 256MB stick in and the missing 8MB is being used by the video chip.

What model is the Aptiva? I might be able to see if there is an update for the BIOS.

Thanks for writing back. The Aitiva is an E Series 190. I know it is maxed out and we have upgraded the computer with all it will take. I did remove some programs to get more ram, the new printer program is hugh (for this computer). Do you think the SP3 package is just too big to download? I know some things about these machines, but learn more all the time out of necessity.

    Thanks again for the info.....Joan

There might be something in SP3 the old hardware can't handle - I really don't know.

IBM's site is like Microsofts"s - very hard to find anything. It seems like they want a number on the sticker on the computer before they allow you to narrow down the search.

There were two bar codes / 11S9137CB190AM7TO8C

    Machine type 2170
    Model 190
    S/N AM7TO8C
    Mfg. Date AK 941

These are the only numbers I found on the outside, didn't look inside. Too scary..

I usually recommend that you do not update the BIOS. If something goes wrong, you end up with a doorstop!
In your case, stay with old, slow and stable XP SP2 - at least the computer is functioning.
The other option is to again put windows 2000 back on the computer if that was working better than XP.
